Delays And More Delays On The Road
It was St. Patty’s Day weekend and I thought we would have the luck of the Irish, but we came up just short in an exciting game on March 18 against the Pistons at a sold-out Charlotte Bobcats Arena. I had a lot of relatives and friends fly in for the game and to celebrate the Irish holiday. And oh yeah, my dad drove to Charlotte in a Winnebago with a bunch of his buddies from Philly pretending to be back in college for a few days. Needless to say, despite the loss, everyone still had a fun weekend.
Next we took on the Orlando Magic and played a tough game to come out with our 19th Bobcat victory.
We then traveled to Cleveland to take on LeBron (James) and the Cavs. I also had a bunch of relatives and friends come to Cleveland for the game. My grandparents were there, and it is always beneficial to have Coach Don Graham (my grandfather) there to give me some good advice following the game. I thought we were going to beat the Cavs, but they hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to put the game in overtime. In the overtime we were tied with a few seconds left when LeBron hit an amazing fade-away jumper at the buzzer to beat us. Raymond Felton played a great game and had some clutch plays late in the game to keep us in it.
Our next stop was probably our team’s most anticipated away game of the season -- Miami. As we were sitting on the plane ready to take off, the pilot said we were going to be delayed a few minutes. After about a half hour of waiting on the runway, we got the word that the plane was having hydraulic problems and we wouldn’t be able take off that night. Of all the cities that we had to lose a night in, the first one of the year had to be Miami. Let’s just say that the guys weren’t too excited to get back on bus and head back to our hotel in Cleveland for the night. The following morning we tried again to fly to Miami and made it, but because of bad thunderstorms, we had to sit on the runway in Miami for about an hour.
We took one to the chin against the Heat. Gerald Wallace literally did when the Big Diesel drilled him with an elbow that put him on the shelf for the rest of the game.
Our last stop on our road trip was in Memphis. We had an extra day to hang out in Memphis, so a bunch of our teammates went to eat at Isaac Hayes restaurant, which was good. Then we saw a movie called “Inside Man” with Denzel Washington that was okay -- nothing great. Melvin Ely was really disappointed and mad that we picked that one, saying he felt he wasted two hours of his life. Primoz Brezec had another classic line during the movie that unfortunately I cannot repeat, but if you were with us you would have been cracking up. One of the actors said a word that Primoz didn’t know, so he yelled out loud to me, “What does ********** mean?” Everyone around us was falling out of their chairs laughing. You can always count on the big fella to give us a good laugh. Later we watched some of the NCAA games and relaxed.
During the Memphis game we experienced a first for most of the guys on our team. A few minutes before the game was about to start, the arena fire alarm went off and they had to evacuate the entire arena. Both teams had leave the court and sit on our team buses for about an hour until it was clear to go back into the arena. I guess one of the elevators caught on fire, but eventually they handled the situation without any harm done. We started the game a little late, but everyone came back into the arena and went to work. I thought our team gave a great effort -- everybody was hitting big shots and making big plays, but we couldn’t close the deal at the very end.
Well, we are excited to be home for a while and play in front of our Bobcats fans the next four games.
See you tonight,
Simple Mistake One To Remember
We finished the tail end of our West Coast road trip about two weeks ago with one win and two losses (yes, it’s been a while since I’ve blogged).
The Clippers beat us for the second time this season, and I can see why Elton Brand is an All-Star -- he is a beast. We then headed to Utah, and that is when it hit me that we had been on the road for a while. I went out to dinner with Kevin Burleson (teammate), Scott Leightman (PR), and Steve Martin (radio commentator) to a Brazilian Steakhouse called Rodizio Grill. If you like meat, this is the place for you because each table has a little wooden stick that is painted green on one end and red on the other and as long as the green end is showing they keep bringing you meat and meat and more meat until you flip it over to red. I was impressed with Kevin because he tried over 21 different kinds of meat including boar, elk, snake, buffalo, and many more animals.
When we returned to the hotel, I went to the third floor and tried to get into my room but my key wouldn’t work for some reason. I thought I was in room 312 but it wasn’t working, so I figured I must be in room 314, but that didn’t work either. I then tried room 316, 318, 320, 310, 308, 306 -- but none of them worked. I then thought maybe I was on the wrong floor and said to myself, “Wait, I’m on the fifth floor in 512,” so I tried 512 and it didn’t work -- 514, 516, 518, 520, 510, 508 didn’t work either. Now I’m getting mad but am too embarrassed to call the front desk just yet. So I walked back to the elevator and decided to use the hallway phone to call the front desk. They told me I was in room 312, which is what I originally thought, so I walked back down to 312. As I was waiting for security to let me in, I tried my key one more time. That’s when I saw it -- I looked at the key and it said Beverly Wilshire -- we were staying in the Salt Lake City Marriott. That is when I realized I was ready to come back home. But I have to be honest, that is not the first time I forgot what room I was staying in on a long road trip.
We took it to the Jazz in Salt Lake City, which doesn’t happen too often because the Delta Center is a tough place to play. Everybody on the team played well against the Jazz, so it was a total team effort that got us the win. That was a big win for us, especially since we were heading to Dallas to take on the Mavs who were coming off a loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Dallas proceeded to beat us on our last game of the road trip and it was back to Charlotte we went.
Next we played the Miami Heat and the “Big Diesel,” and his team of experienced vets did not let us steal a win. After the game, while we were walking to our car, I said “What’s up” to Shaq. He said hello and introduced himself to my wife and called her by her name, which made her feel pretty cool. The rest of the night I had to listen to Melanie tell me how Shaq and her are such good friends.
Our next game we had the Golden State Warriors in town, so I had a chance to catch up with my old college teammate at Notre Dame, Troy Murphy, who plays for the Warriors. It is always fun when I see Murph because we get to share a lot of funny NBA stories. The game was pretty intense from start to finish but we pulled out the victory. Following that game, the New York Knicks were up next and we had another good team effort that put another win in the W column for us. It’s kind of hard to believe that the Knicks payroll is so ridiculously high and that just two players annual salary combined on the Knicks team make as much as our entire Bobcat roster of 15 players.
It is never much fun playing in Detroit and unfortunately, the Pistons beat us again ending our two game win streak. Then the Washington Wizards got us two games in a row in our home-and-home series.
Hopefully we can turn things around in front of a sold-out crowd when Detroit comes to town Saturday night. I will see you all there!
Well, it has been a little while since my last blog, but due to the All-Star Break and our longest road trip of the season, I haven’t had much time to use the computer. The last time I talked to you, we were preparing for our game against the New Jersey Nets. We played a tough game against the Nets that came down to the final seconds. We were losing by one point with less than 30 seconds left and coach ran a play for me to come off a double-screen. Brevin Knight found me in the corner and I hit what I thought was a three-pointer but the referee called it a two because my foot was on the line. After that, we had the lead by one and it was the Nets ball. While I was covering Vince Carter, he looked at me and said he thought he tipped that shot, and I said, “Not that one.” I knew Vince was going to take the next shot, and he had me on an isolation at the top of the key. He drove right and Melvin Ely helped up and forced him to take a tough floater he missed, but somehow the ball bounced right back to Vince and he tipped it back in the basket. We ended up losing by one point.
The next day was the first of our four-day All-Star Break. I decided to head down to Miami for a few days and relax on the beach with my family. A couple of my teammates went to Miami to get away also. Miami was extremely crowded because the International Boat Show was happening in Miami that weekend, but we still managed to rest up and heal some of our aches and pains from the first 54 games of the season. We had some good seafood and Cuban food and enjoyed some great warm and sunny weather.
Following the All-Star Break, our team met in Denver on Monday for an evening practice. Let’s just say that if we had to pick a city to play in after four days off, Denver would definitely be at the bottom of the list because of the altitude, which makes it a little tougher on our wind. When you are not use to playing in the high altitude of Denver, players become tired more quickly.
After practice, Primoz and I went to eat at one of our favorite restaurants -- Ruth Chris Steakhouse. It’s funny when we order because we don’t even need to look at the menu. We already know what we are going to eat. We start with the lobster bisque, then the filet mignon with sides of mashed potatoes and cream of spinach, and for dessert it’s always the warm apple crisp with ice cream.
The Nuggets jumped on us from the start, but we managed to catch up once we adjusted to the altitude. We were winning at the break, played a great first half and the entire team was shooting terrific. The second half was a little different. We missed some of the shots we were making in the first half and just couldn’t maintain our same level of play and ended up losing.
Next we flew to Portland to take on the Blazers. It is always exciting for me to visit a city that I used to play in like Portland because it brings back a lot of memories. We had one thing in mind going into the Portland game and that was to win. We knew that we had blown an opportunity to get a win against the Blazers a few weeks ago at home. One nice thing about playing in Portland is we get to do a little shopping at the Nike employee store. Last year I used to wear AND1’s and this year I switched over to Nike, so my teammates who are with AND1 were giving me a hard time and calling me a traitor since I am with Nike now. Having GW back in our lineup really gave us a spark. Having GW flying all around the court blocking shots and dunking gives our team a lot of momentum throughout the game. We put together a total team effort and came out victorious. It was very important that we got that win, because we knew the rest of our road trip was going to be tough.
The one nice thing about our long road trip was that we spent a couple extra days in Phoenix. Phoenix in February is not a bad place to be when the weather is sunny and in the 80’s. Our first day in Phoenix we had a day off so Brevin Knight, Joe Sharpe, Dan Miller (my college teammate) and I played a round of golf. We all knew it was going to be ugly since none of us have played since the summer. But I will give our captain and point guard Brevin Knight some props because he took home the crown, and I must admit he is a pretty good golfer. But I told him the only reason he beat me is because he is 30 years old, which is a lot older than me, and your golf game improves with age -- or so I hope it does. I also had some good Mexican food with one of my high school teammates Mike Ostrowski. The Phoenix game was really one of the most exciting games we’ve played this year. The Suns play an up-tempo style of basketball, and that is exactly how we played too. We were winning at halftime and had scored over 70 points. By the end of the third quarter, I Iooked at the score and we already had over 100 points, which caused me to do double take because I couldn’t believe it. Unfortunately, we ran out of gas, but I give our guys a lot of credit because I think everyone played an impressive game and gave it everything they had. Coach Bickerstaff changed our offense and gave us the freedom to play to our strengths and shoot the basketball.
I have a lot more to share with you but I have to get ready for our game so I will be back in a few days. Until then keep supporting your Bobcats,
For three games in a row we were feeling as good as we have felt about our basketball team in a long time. We started our longest winning streak in Bobcats history with a big win over the Lakers (on February 3). I think our team took it personally when we heard a lot of people jokingly say, “don’t let Kobe score 81 points on you guys.” The entire team came into the arena that night with an intense focus that I haven’t seen in awhile. I think that win against the Lakers was important, not just for us, but for our fans also. I saw a lot more Lakers fans in the arena than I expected, but I guess a team like that just has a large fan following everywhere. It felt good to shut them up and hear our true Bobcat fans do all the cheering at the end.
Next we beat the Seattle SuperSonics and their star Ray Allen. It felt good to beat another Western Conference team because the Bobcats have not had as much success with the West Coast teams. We then played the Philadelphia 76ers, and you know I wanted to get this win. The Sixers took a 10-point lead on us, but late in the second half we fought back and finally delivered our Bobcat fans our first three-game winning streak in team history.
Unfortunately in the Sixers game, two of our most important players, Brevin (Knight) and Raymond (Felton) both got a little banged up. We knew it was going to be a tough game vs. Toronto without out our two PG’s running the show. This allowed Kevin Burleson to make his first NBA career start, which I was happy for him to get that opportunity. We had the lead at halftime but couldn’t close the door late in the game, and Toronto ended our longest winning streak. During the Raptor’s game, I set a new career high with 26 points, which shocked me because playing without our teams two best playmakers I thought it would be harder to get shots. But as they always say, “That’s why we play the games, because you never know.”
Next we flew up to a cold and snowy Milwaukee to take on the Bucks. Raymond was back in the lineup but Brevin was not ready yet. This was a game that we could of won but we let slip away in the last couple minutes. Overall our team played a good game and defended their big scorers well, but it just wasn’t enough. Then we came home to get ready for Portland and were eager to pull out a win since the Blazers had been struggling recently. For some odd reason, we came out flat from the beginning of the game and things did not change. This was a very disappointing loss for us because we knew we let a good opportunity slip away from us. Coach Bickerstaff was frustrated with our effort, and rightfully so.
We play the New Jersey Nets to night and then we have our All-Star Break. This break hopefully will rejuvenate our team and let some players heal their nagging injuries. We have played more games than any other team in the NBA. We have already played over 50 games and with all the injuries we have suffered, it has not been easy. I am sincerely counting on the break to give us a fresh start to finish our remaining season.
Matt
We Won't Stop Trying
I thought that our team played very well in two of our last four games. We put ourselves in a position to win the Miami and Washington games but came up a little short.
It definitely hurt us by not having Brevin Knight in the lineup against the Wizards. Every time we play against Shaq, I am continually amazed at how big, powerful and explosive he is as a player. One thing I like about Shaq is that he is always joking around and cracking jokes, as he was before the game while we were in the weight room. Shaq seems like he is a fun person to hang out with and be around.
I have to thank our fans for the unbelievable support you gave us during the Miami Heat game. The arena was sold out, and it was an awesome atmosphere to play in.
During my college career at Notre Dame, our record at the MCI Center in Washington DC, was 6-0. I haven’t had as much luck in the NBA, but we always put up a good fight in that arena. It’s always fun to play in DC because I have a lot of family members and friends who live in the area. Unfortunately, with our schedule we never have much time to spend in the city, but it is still enjoyable to see my friends and family after the game for a few minutes.
Every close game we lose, it seems like each team has one player that steps up and makes a few big plays to beat us. In the Heat game, Antoine Walker hit some big shots, and in the Wizards game, Antawn Jamison busted a couple big threes that really hurt us.
Our last two games -- well there isn’t much to talk about. LeBron and the Cavs brought there A-game to Charlotte and the Hawks played good enough to beat us.
This has been a tough and frustrating month for our entire team. Everyone here is a competitor and it’s extremely tough to lose a bunch of games in a row, especially when we have so many players hurt and unable to help us break this streak.
One thing I can guarantee is we will not quit and will continue to work as hard as we can and try to get a win for our fans.
See everyone on tonight as we take on Kobe and the Lakers.
This Has To End
Well, our streak has continued, and I’m not talking about a winning streak.
We did not have too much good luck on our last road trip, which included an extended visit to Texas. We started off in Indiana, and as usual, we played strong for most of the game but came up short with a few possessions in the fourth quarter.
We then returned home to play the Orlando Magic. Stephanie Ready, our team reporter, was talking to Jameer Nelson before the game and he brought up a game that we played against each other in high school because he knows I am still bitter about it. Jameer played for Chester High School and I played for Hatboro-Horsham High School. We played against each other in the playoffs and our game went into overtime with Jameer hitting a game-winning shot at the buzzer to beat us.
After high school, my brother Pat played with Jameer at St. Joseph’s University, and I think Pat forgave Jameer because Pat ended up setting every three-point shooting record in school history because Jameer hooked him up with so many perfect passes. Obviously, Stephanie asked me to confirm the truth about Jameer’s story, and I had to confess that it was accurate.
The Magic beat us, and I have came to the conclusion that Dwight Howard is going to be a superstar in this league someday. Kevin Burleson asked me during the game if I thought Dwight could be as good as Shaq someday? I don’t know if anyone will ever be as dominant as Shaq, but I know for sure that he is going to be a special player in this league.
We played a good first half in Milwaukee on Saturday, followed by a third quarter letdown. That has been a recurring theme for the Bobcats as of late. Unfortunately, we had another player get injured -- Keith Bogans -- which will not help us break this streak. I am honestly shocked at how many players our team has lost this year because of an injury or sickness. I feel like the last time we had our entire team completely healthy and ready to play was in training camp.
I always enjoy going back to San Antonio since I use to play for them in my rookie year. It was fun to catch up with some old Spurs teammates and find out how everyone was doing. I am always following the box scores of my former teams so I know how they are doing on the court, but it was cool to find out how everyone was doing off the court. The Spurs showed us why they are arguably the best team in basketball.
Their offensive floor spacing impressed me. It seemed like all five players are always in the right spot, but I guess it doesn’t hurt to have a big man like Tim Duncan that draws a double team almost every time he touches the ball in the post. After the game our team didn’t have too much to smile about, so it was nice to see Eva Longoria after the game when she was walking out with Tony (Parker).
Our last stop on the road was in Houston. Every time we play in Houston, one of my college roommates, Matt Fox, always takes me to a great Mexican restaurant to get some fajitas.
It’s good to see Melvin Ely back on the court because he gives us a strong presence in the low post. When Mel and I are in the game together, coach (Bernie) Bickerstaff likes us to play a two-man game. Usually when I feed the post my man doesn’t help off, which enables Mel to go to work on the block. If my defender helps down on Mel, he just kicks it out to me for a three-pointer.
We had a full week of games this week, playing five games in seven days. Things started out very exciting with a big win against the Houston Rockets after two overtimes. I give our team a lot of credit for being so resilient. The Rockets hit two three-pointers basically at the buzzer to force the game into two OT's. Everybody was exhausted after that game since we were undermanned to begin with.
Next, we headed to Toronto to take on the Raptors. I knew this was going to be a tough game since everyone played so many extra minutes in the double-overtime victory against Houston. We competed hard the entire game but ran out of gas in the last couple minutes.
Our team spent the night in Toronto and had chance to rest up and just travel the next day. Friday we played the Milwaukee Bucks, and we suffered through another heart breaker. We gave it everything we had and scrapped the entire game but ended up losing by one point. It is amazing how so many NBA games are decided by one or two plays. During the Bucks game I had a dunk and my teammates were all joking with me saying, "I guess a white man can jump."
Following the Bucks game, we flew up to Detroit and knew that wasn't going to be an easy night. The Pistons have so many weapons, which makes them so hard to guard. If we double-teamed or helped off someone on defense, they moved the ball so well that they always seemed to score. The Pistons offense is so balanced that we could not help off of anyone. Unfortunately we had a rough night in Detroit, and to top it off, "Kid Rock" was sitting in the first row talking trash to us.
On Sunday, Bobcats Owner Bob Johnson had our entire team over his house to watch the Carolina Panthers game. We had a great time eating together and cheering the Panthers to victory. It was fun getting a chance to watch the Panthers, considering we see a lot of them at our games.
To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we had a 1:00 p.m. game against the New Orleans/ Oklahoma City Hornets. This was our first afternoon game, and I think our team is more of a night team than a morning team. We could not get things clicking and the Hornets had it going. The good thing is that we don’t have too many afternoon games left on our schedule. That was our fifth game in seven days, and it was obvious that we were a little tired since we have been playing with our small lineup.
Well, the good thing about the NBA is that we have a lot of games, so we always have a chance to learn and move forward from our last game in a short period of time.
Good Luck Panthers!!!!!
Matt
Road Trip Was Rough
After a facing a tough Suns team at home and 2004-05 NBA MVP Steve Nash, we had to head on the road for our next three games. In Oklahoma City we faced a physical Hornets squad, and I think we really missed our big guys who are hurt. We needed some horses under the boards to help us rebound and block some shots. We competed hard and gave it everything we had but it wasn’t enough to beat the Hornets that night. I was impressed by the fan support the Hornets have at home. The game was sold out and the fans were loud and very energetic in Oklahoma City. It is obvious how excited the city is to have and NBA team in town.
We had a practice day in Boston and following practice, we had a team field trip to the movies. Every person who travels with the Bobcats -- players, coaches, trainers, media, etc, were all invited to go see the movie “Glory Road.” We went to a matinee and rented out the entire theater, which was pretty cool. “Glory Road” was a fabulous movie. I was a big fan of “Remember the Titans,” so I figured I would like this movie also. “Glory Road” was an inspirational movie and showed many of the Bobcats players how much things have changed in NCAA basketball.
Since the movie took place in the 1960’s, many of our players did not know the story of Texas Western and how it changed college basketball forever. Texas Western was the first team in NCAA history to start five African American players in a game and went on to beat Kentucky in the National Championship game. During the movie, the Texas Western coach told his team the day before the game that he made a decision that he was not going to play any of the white players on the team. Although many of the white players were upset that they were not going to play in the biggest game of their lives, they believed in what their coach was doing and had the foresight to see that this game meant more than just basketball.
Before our team ran onto the court in Boston for warm-ups, we huddled up in the tunnel and Brevin Knight gave us our pregame talk and then Primoz (Brezec) said, “Come on, lets play like Texas Western tonight.” The whole team started laughing. I looked at Primo and said, “Well big guy, I guess you’re not playing tonight,” then and we all started laughing. The positive thing that our team takes from seeing a movie like that together is that it brings us closer together. We can joke with each other about anything because we are like a second family for each other.
As usual, we played very hard against Boston, but Paul Pierce took over and beat us again at the end of the game. It was hard to swallow the loss because that is the second time this year in Boston that we lost by three points or less.
Back in Charlotte, we practiced and prepared for our game against Orlando. This was not our normal road trip because it was our once-a-season family trip. Every person who travels with the team is permitted to bring their wife or girlfriend along for the trip. It was funny to see all the players on their best behavior and not joking around as much as we usually do. When we arrived in Orlando, my wife and I jumped in a car and headed over to Disney World so we could ride Space Mountain, which is one of my favorite roller coasters of all time. We had fun just hanging out and acting like kids for a few hours.
Unfortunately, our game did not end up like we had planned as we lost to the Magic. Our team is really starting to miss the big guys, and hopefully we will have a few of them back in the lineup soon.
See you all tonight when we take on the Houston Rockets!
We need your support!
We’ve been faced with some adversity recently with all the injuries we have experienced on our team. On paper, if you look at our roster and see the players we have on our injured reserve list, most people would bet against us. But our team has used that to motivate us to play fearlessly every game. We know we are playing with a short bench, but we do not care. As players, we are taking the attitude, “we have to go with what we got,” meaning if we have five guards on the floor at one time, we are going to compete no matter what the matchups look like. We all realize that we are going to have to play out of position, but if that is what coach calls on us to do, we are going to do it.
The Clippers gave us some trouble in the paint and took advantage of our small lineup. We hung around for most of the game but couldn’t get over that hump to make a late-game run. I dove for a loose ball in the second half and as I was reaching for the ball, I hit my chin on the floor and had to be taken out of the game because it’s a rule that no player can play while bleeding or with blood on their uniform. Our team doctors took me back to the locker room and gave me six stitches, and by the time I came back out to bench, the game was about over. I think I have gotten stitches on my face in just about every NBA team I have played on.
I think our team had a great Christmas since we had a day off to enjoy with our families. We all came back refreshed for our game against Atlanta. We started out on fire and continued to play well throughout the first half. In the second half, the Hawks made a run, but we hung in there and came up with some big plays late in the game. We have been playing very well as a team -- sharing the ball on offense and playing good help defense. After beating the Hawks, we jumped on the plane with our small team and headed back to Charlotte. It is different being on the plane without much of our team there and seeing all the open seats.
I had some family fly down for the game against Chicago -- my mom and grandparents. My grandfather (Coach Don Graham) who is the winningest high school boy’s basketball coach in the state of Pennsylvania gave me a few pointers before the game that helped me with my foul shots.
We were looking forward to this game against the Bulls because they had made some comments in the papers the last time we beat them in Chicago that we didn’t like. Our only two post players that we had dressed for the game, Melvin (Ely) and Primoz (Brezec), stepped up and had great games against the Bulls. All of our players played hard and competed throughout the entire game, and we made a nice run late in the third quarter. My grandfather’s advice paid off and I hit all five of my free throws. During the game, I drove to the hoop and did a spin move and took a one-handed fadeaway shot. My teammates were messing with me and asking me when was the last time I practiced that shot? I said, “Um, probably about once this year, but it went in and I’ll take it.” When Brevin sprained his ankle and we knew he wasn’t returning to the game. we wanted get this win for our captain. Every player contributed and helped the Bobcats pull out a win against Chicago.
Well, we have a big game against the Suns today and will need as much fan support as possible.
Life's Always Better When You're Winning
I can honestly say I like writing much better after a couple wins, rather than a couple of losses. We’ve won three of our last four games. It started in New Jersey when we beat a good Nets team on the road. Brevin Knight played a fabulous game in his home state. He hit big shot after big shot and came up with some incredible steals in clutch situations. It felt great to get the monkey off our backs and increase the number in our win column.
Then we returned home for a couple days of practice before we took on one of the best teams in the NBA, the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons are as about as good as you can get in every position. I do not see many weaknesses in their lineup. Unfortunately the Pistons got the best of us and showed us why they won a World Championship.
We have had some bad luck with injuries recently, with Jake (Voskuhl) being out and Melvin (Ely) getting sick. Then, during the Kings game Kareem (Rush) hurt his finger and left the game along with the “Pick” (Emeka Okafor), who sprained his ankle. Our bench came up big that night as we rallied together and beat the Kings in overtime. I usually feel confident if we go into overtime at home because with our home crowd support, I believe we have an advantage late in the game when we need some energy.
Following our game against the Kings, we drove to the airport and flew to Chicago. Since we arrived in Chicago late that night, coach cancelled shootaround so we could get a little extra rest. While I was sitting in my hotel room, I was thinking about how we needed to get revenge on the Bulls after we blew a 20-point lead going into the fourth quarter during our season opener.
I did some Christmas shopping that afternoon because our hotel was right next to Michigan Ave, which has some great shopping. The only bad thing about shopping in Chicago in the winter is it was about seven below and freezing. I usually do not like to just sit in my room all afternoon on game days like most of my teammates because I am not a big nap guy.
Looking at our shorthanded and small lineup consisting of mostly guards and wings, I doubt many people expected us to beat the Bulls in Chicago. But the came out and played with what we had, and even though we were small, we hustled on defense and made things difficult for the Bulls. I think our small lineup confused the Bulls because they didn’t match up with us when, at times, we had no big guys in the game -- just guards and wings. G-Dub (Gerald Wallace) had one of the most impressive plays I have seen this season, when he had two huge blocks and took a charge virtually all in the same possession. Right after he took the charge, he walked to the bench and I could tell he was exhausted. Deservingly, he was done for the night since the game was about over.
On the plane home everybody was in a great mood. It is amazing how a couple wins can change the atmosphere of the entire team. Everyone was having a good time, laughing and making fun of each other.
I look forward to seeing all our Bobcats fans tonight as we take on the Clippers and try to make history with three straight wins.
Merry Christmas,
We Need A Win
After seven straight losses, everyone on the team is tired of losing, and we need to get a win. Last week was another tough week for us, even though we were home.
New Jersey came out firing, and we did not have an answer for Vince Carter. Vince started the game by banging a couple of jumpers in a row and just kept rolling.
We traveled to my home city, Philadelphia, on Thursday, and I had a chance to catch up and go out to dinner with my family and friends to Morton’s Steakhouse. I was hoping we would win another game in Philly, but unfortunately we came up a little short. Iverson had his usual 40+ points and, despite us making our late-game Bobcats comeback to bring the score to within four with a few minutes remaining, the Sixers hung on to win. We kept fighting to the end and knew that the Sixers had blown a couple of games in the last couple of minutes recently.
After the game, we flew back to Charlotte because we were playing the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night. We have a better record than the Raptors, so we were favored to win the game. The Raptors just outplayed us. That’s a disappointment because that is a game we should have won -- especially being at home. Chris Bosh hit some big shots late in the game that hurt us.
Our team is trying to find a way to start the game with more energy and come out of the gate with more fire. We seem to be playing catch up too much and Coach Bickerstaff is stressing the importance of being ready from the start. On Monday we had a very tough practice. Coach worked us extremely hard, and I thought it was a great practice. We needed it. We did a lot of extra conditioning and competed hard.
After practice, Kevin Burleson and I visited a Hemby Children's Hospital to spend some time with a bunch of kids. We spent a few minutes hanging out with every kid in their room, took a picture with them and gave them bag full of Bobcats goodies. It really brightened my day to see the kids smile when we came into their hospital rooms. Also, it was funny to see all the children’s reaction when they saw our mascot, Rufus, come in the room. Most of the kids love to see Rufus and laugh at all the funny things he does. Whenever I leave the hospital, I truly feel blessed and humbled. It sure makes me think twice about when I’m upset or angry because I missed a shot in a game, because life could be a lot worse.
Later that night, I went out with some teammates to dinner and the U2 concert. It was fun to sit in a different seat other than the team bench to see an event. And wow, what show U2 put on. I saw U2 in concert while I was in college at Notre Dame and they put on an awesome show, as well, but I think this one was even better.
After four losses on the West Coast, I think it was time for us to come home and regroup. We could have won two of the four games we played. The first two games against Sacramento and Seattle, we dug ourselves a hole early in the game and they came out shooting lights out from the start. Although, the last two games we played against Golden State and Los Angeles, we put ourselves in a situation to win the game but came up short.
The Lakers game was the most painful for us to accept because we felt like we played well enough and deserved to win that game, but with a guy named Kobe Bryant on the court, anything is possible. Kobe is such a clutch player that if the score is close, he is going to try and take over. We knew Kobe was going to have the ball and take the last shot on the last play, and we still couldn’t stop him. I guess that is why he is one of the best players in the NBA. During the Golden State game, despite playing hard from start to finish, we couldn’t pull it out in the end. I can not even explain how frustrating it is for our team when we play well enough to win so many games and always seem to come up a point or two short because of one or two late-game situations.
Let’s just say we are excited to be back playing at home in front of our home fans.
I had a chance to catch up with some friends on the West Coast during the little free time that we had. In San Francisco, I went out to dinner with my college teammate, Troy Murphy, who plays for the Golden State Warriors. I told Troy to take it easy on us, but unfortunately he didn’t listen to me and scored 18 points and had 12 boards - some friend he is. In L.A I caught up with some friends from high school. Our entire team had to buy a few extra tickets for the Lakers game because for some reason everybody has people they know in L.A.
We are looking forward to seeing everybody at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena this week to cheer us on to victory.
See you there,
2-1, I'll take that!
Thanksgiving was great. I had my whole family make the trip from Philly to Charlotte and celebrate Thanksgiving with us. This was my wife’s Thanksgiving debut in the kitchen and she did a wonderful job. Coach pushed back our flight departure time to 7:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, giving us a few extra hours to enjoy the day with our families. Kevin Burleson came over and spent Thanksgiving with my family. I can remember my rookie season when I was playing for the Portland Trail Blazers and didn’t have any family out there, so Coach Maurice Cheeks invited me and another rookie over his house to eat Thanksgiving dinner. With our crazy schedules, it is tough to even have family visit because we are only home for a day or two before going back on the road. Our profession does not really factor Holidays into our schedules, so it was very enjoyable to at least get to spend the afternoon with our families on Thanksgiving Day.
My family got to see two Bobcats games last week, and surprisingly have never seen the Bobcats lose a game in person. I told my family they might have to spend the year in Charlotte, or at least until the season is over at this point. My family has an impressive 5-0 record over the last two seasons for games attended.
We had two nice wins at home this past week - I’ll take that. We have really been playing well in our home arena. I have to give Gerald Wallace some love because he has been playing awesome. He does some things during the game where everyone on our team just stops, looks at each other and shakes our heads in amazement. I can’t think of too many players in the NBA that are more athletic than Gerald. I still can’t get over the block he had against Washington when he jumped up and just caught Etan Thomas’ shot. I was sitting on the bench trying to figure out whether Gerald gets credit for a block, steal, or rebound. I think he should get credited for all three stats because the play was that unbelievable. There are a few players that can single handedly change the tempo of a game, and GW is one of those players.
Unfortunately I caught the flu in Boston and it put me out of commission for the game. I had to watch the game from inside the locker room, which was not very fun. It was a rough couple of days, but I am feeling better now. I couldn’t eat for a while but I think I’m finally back to normal.
During our wins against New York and Washington, I really noticed how much our fans have been helping us win. We truly feel like we have a home court advantage when we are playing in our arena in front of our fans. I do have to thank and encourage everyone to continue to support us and keep helping us win at home.
We had a long flight out to Sacramento and all the players were getting a little restless on the flight. On a positive note, I came out victorious in a bet I had with Brevin Knight on the Notre Dame vs. Stanford football game. I was a little nervous because the game came down to the final minute, but the luck of the Irish came through in the end. After practice at ARCO Arena, a bunch of us grabbed lunch in the hotel and then went to the mall. Sacramento is not the most happening city, but they do have a movie theater so Sean (May), Alan (Anderson), Kevin (Burleson) and I went to see a movie.
Well, that’s it for me I am going to finish watching season one of “Lost” and get some sleep.
Have a great week!
It was a tough week for the Bobcats. Playing four games in five days is always a challenge, regardless of what team you are. It felt great to beat the Pacers at home, which was a big win for us. It was one of those nights where everything was clicking. Most games a few players are having a good game and a couple are not, but that night everyone was lighting it up.
Following a poorly played game against the Magic (on November 15), Coach Bickerstaff jumped on us pretty good and made his point clear that we needed to pick up our energy and start playing better team defense like we did earlier in the season. We responded to his request and played very good team defense, which forced many turnovers that we converted into points. I think our team is at its best when we are playing aggressive defense, forcing turnovers and using that effort to create easy opportunities on the offensive end.
After beating the Pacers convincingly on Wednesday night, we knew they were going to be ready to play when we traveled to Indiana on Friday. Unfortunately, we played well for most of the game until the end when the Pacers pulled away and won.
When I was in Indianapolis on Thursday night, I was out to dinner and bumped into and old friend of mine named Gerome Sapp. He went to Notre Dame, too, and now plays football for the Indianapolis Colts. It was a coincidence that Kevin Burleson was eating with me that night, because Gerome has had to cover Kevin's brother, Nate, when the Colts play against the Minnesota Vikings. After dinner Kevin, Mark Coffelt, Scott Leightman and I had to make a stop at Steak 'n Shake and grab a milkshake for dessert. When I was in college, my boys and I used to stop by Steak 'n Shake late night to get some food and milk shakes because it was the only place usually open late in Indiana.
We flew into Minnesota late that night, and the hotel we stay at in Minneapolis is one of my favorite hotels. We stay at the Le Meridien, and it is a really cool spot that has sort of a European style to it. Every room has its own 50-inch plasma TV on the wall. They even have a plasma TV in the bathroom, so I did not miss a second of college football games on TV that day.
The Timberwolves just flat out beat us on Saturday. KG was having his normal double-double night, and the rest of the team was playing well too. We have to learn from our mistakes in that game and move forward to our next one at home against New York.
Monday we had a night off, so most of my teammates went to Maggiano's Italian restaurant - not to eat, but to give back to the community. We served a Thanksgiving dinner to over 100 kids that came from all kinds of different situations. Everyone had a great time serving dinner, and I was in charge of the dishing out the stuffing. After we served all the kids, we sat down and spent some time with all the children. We ended the night with Raymond Felton and I reading a book called "Turkey Surprise" to everyone. Looking back at it, that was one of the highlights of my week.
Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving,
Thursday, was a normal practice day. I thought we had a good practice and played well. After practice I did a Read to Achieve photo shoot with Emeka Okafor, Sean May, and Brevin Knight at Discovery Place in Uptown Charlotte, and that’s when the “fun” began.
The photo shoot was scheduled to only take about 30 minutes. But it took about an extra hour because Sean and Brevin showed up late. When I arrived at the Discovery Place I wasn't sure what we had to do, but I knew we had to take a group picture for our "Read to Achieve" posters that we will distribute to the different schools when we go read to children.
When I found out that we were taking the photos in a rain forest, I didn't think anything of it until they asked me if I wanted to hold a live snake during the pictures. That was probably the last thing I wanted to hear, because if there is one thing in this world that I am afraid of, it is snakes. For my entire life I have been scared of those creepy crawlers and seriously do not even like to look at them.
When Emeka heard he could hold a snake, he got all excited and said yes. Then they asked me if I wanted to hold a huge 10-foot long and fat boa constrictor and I guess my facial expression kind of gave away my fear of snakes.
I was trying to tell Emeka not to hold it during the shoot, but he wouldn't listen and thought it
was funny that I didn't want the snake in the picture. When Sean arrived, he volunteered to hold a snake too, but thankfully Brevin declined the offer.
After I realized the snakes were definitely going to be a part of our picture, I accepted it but tried to stay as far away as possible from them. When the photo shoot was over, Emeka and Sean thought it would be funny to chase me with the giant boas wrapped around their necks. I felt pretty soft running away in this man-made rain forest, but I couldn't help it or hide my fear.
After this traumatizing photo shoot, all I ask is that the kids who receive our posters really like the posters and appreciate them. I will admit my teammates got the best of me on Thursday, but trust me, I will get them back - don't worry about that.
Everyone has a weakness, and I will definitely find out what Emeka's and Sean's are. Until then, if anyone has any good ideas or pranks that I can use to get revenge on Emeka or Sean, I am
open to ideas.
Have a great day,
Wow, it feels great to be playing regular season NBA games. The level of competition is much more intense. We had a roller coaster week. We opened up in Chicago and clearly outplayed the Bulls but ended up losing in overtime. We were winning by more than 20 points heading into the fourth quarter and ended up losing. We did not deserve to lose that game, but unfortunately that is how the NBA works.
We came back strong for our second game in Philadelphia. This game was probably more meaningful for me than most of my teammates. I am from Philadelphia and grew up watching the Sixers throughout my childhood, and I wanted nothing more than to beat Allen Iverson and the Sixers in Philly. Also, I played for Coach Mo Cheeks in Portland, so I was familiar with the entire coaching staff and most of the players.
I had close to 100 friends and family at the game cheering for the Bobcats. We ended up beating the Sixers convincingly (110-93), and it felt great to get that win in my hometown. I got a chance to spend time with my family the day before the game, which was a lot of fun. We went out to eat downtown and caught up on everything.
After the Philly game, we flew back to Charlotte to get ready for our home opener in our amazing new arena. I think everyone on the Bobcats was all pumped up to play for the first time in front of our home crowd. When we came out for warm-ups, I couldn’t believe how many people were at the game. It was a sellout crowd and they were rocking.
It was pretty cool seeing celebrities, like Nelly, Ashanti, Bob Johnson, and Will Ferrell sitting in the first row. But local celebrity, North Carolina Coach Roy Williams, got the biggest applause when they announced he and his wife were at the game. On a side note, I think Will Ferrell is one of the funniest actors out right now.
I made my first NBA start against the Boston Celtics, which was pretty cool. My parents decided Saturday morning that they wanted to see our home opener, so they went to the airport in Philly and hopped on a flight to Charlotte and made the game. What a game it was! We ended up beating the Celtics in overtime, and it was a perfect way to open our new arena. The fans were awesome, and I seriously think that the fans helped us pull out the win late in the game when we were tired.
I love everything about the new arena and our team is extremely excited to play all our home games there in front of such an energetic crowd.
Talk to you next week,
After a few months away from doing my true passion, writing, I’m back on the keyboard. Okay, I’m not really serious. Writing is not my passion, but basketball is and since I like to talk a lot, I guess the Blog Squad is a good fit for me.
The preseason is just about finished and now it’s time to get the real thing started. I think our team had a positive preseason and improved each day. Besides having a consistent list of players shelved with injuries for several preseason games, we managed to get our work done considering our lack of a completely healthy roster. Since it is the preseason, having our players healthy and feeling 100 percent for the regular season takes priority over playing hurt in the preseason, which is what most players will probably do during the regular season when the games count in our win- loss record. Fortunately, the Bobcats have great trainers, Joe Sharpe and Mark Coffelt, who every player spends countless hours working with throughout the season trying to prevent and rehab injuries.
During the last day of training camp in Wilmington, I injured my right elbow. I could not straighten my right arm for a few days, which for me was not a good injury. I had to go a couple days without shooting, and that was like punishment for me. Joe treated me like a baseball pitcher and monitored the number of shots I could take each day. I like to shoot at least a couple hundred shots every day, so it was a struggle to listen to Joe’s orders, but I trusted him.
I think by our first regular season game we should have all of our team ready to play. It was good to play with big Sean May again in our last preseason game against Indiana. That was the first time I played with him since the summer league.
One of the toughest aspects of the preseason is that our team starts out with around 20 players and by the end of it, we have to cut the roster down to at the most 15 players. As a player, when you are working your butt off every day, competing and trying your best to earn a spot on the team, you can’t help but develop respect for your teammates. Even though every player knows some guys will be cut, it never sets in until you come in to work the next day and see a teammate’s locker cleaned out. That is it for him.
I especially feel for the players who have gotten released because I have been in that situation and know what it feels like. The only way to describe that feeling is for you to imagine having a life-long dream and know that you’ve been working for this dream for a majority of your life. The more you improve as a player, the more levels you reach - from high school to college. Each level you get to, your balloon grows a little more. Then, when you are so close that you tell yourself all the years of hard work are going to pay off and your dreams could become a reality in a few days, your balloon pops and you get waived.
It is really not that bad, but for a few days that is how you feel. I did not make the NBA on my first try, and that’s why I feel for the players who get released because I know what they are going through.
Based upon what I have seen this preseason, I think the Bobcats are going to surprise a lot of teams this year. I think we have a team full of players that compliment each other and are willing to lay it on the line every night we play.
Everyone is extremely excited about the new arena and rightfully so. It is amazing, and I think it is the best arena in the NBA. I hope that we get some great crowds for our games because I know the fans will enjoy themselves. It would be hard not to have fun in that kind of venue.
Talk to you soon,
