Backstage With Michael Jordan
June 23, 2006

  • Go back to Bobcats Draft Central

Managing Member of Basketball Operations Michael Jordan was in attendance for player workouts for the 2006 NBA Draft on Thursday at the Presbyterian Hospital Training Center at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. It was the first time since becoming part owner of the Bobcats that Jordan attended a workout.

BobcatsBasketball.com scoured the internet on Friday to find excerpts of all of Jordan's quotes to the media after the workout and put them in one place for our fans to read. The following are Jordan's comments from all of the excerpts:

"I’m not going to step on Bernie (Bickerstaff)’s toes. Obviously, he’s the general manager and he’s the coach so, as of right now, we talk daily. Once the season starts and the activity begins, I’ll probably be down more than normal. Obviously, I’d like to be down for every game, but I’m not saying I’ll be here for every game. But believe me, I’m going to be in tune and going to pay attention. My ultimate responsibility is to get this basketball team back to where it has to go."

"We are committed to trying to provide a team (our fans) can support. Sometimes it’s about money, but then it’s not about money. You have to pick and choose as how you want to approach the focus. Is it about making money or is it about winning? I think what’s been done up to this point, mistakes have been made and some decisions should have been second-guessed. What’s been asked of me is my opinion about how we should attack this scenario, and I feel it has to be done on the basketball court. The unfortunate thing is that we had a team prior to what is here now and a lot of distaste was left. The fans and public here are consumers for what we are trying to provide, entertainment. Where we have to go about re-establishing that connection is to improve and put out entertainment that they can support, and that’s the approach we will use from this day forward. Obviously (Bobcats Majority Owner Bob Johnson) has seen what has transpired over the last two or three years in terms of the business within the basketball situation and you know things need to be changed, which is one of the reasons I’m here."

"I think I have enough to go to Bob and say we need X amount of dollars to make sure we can build the foundation. Unless we do that, the business is never going to flourish, and that’s been proven in the past. This has been proven as a viable market. When they had a good team, a hard-working team, the public supported it. That is what we have to get back. You can't go in with the business ahead of (a product) that hasn’t really improved yet."

"I’m not a seller. (Johnson) is fully aware that I’m not a part of a dog-and-pony show, that’s not me. I want to go and build this team so that the team supports itself."

"My brother lives here, so I’ve been here quite frequently and you guys have probably never known it. Will I have another home here? I don’t know. I do come here more than you guys know. I know my way around. I don’t need a driver. I’m more of a local than you think."

"It’s a proven ground that left a bitter taste when the other team left. North Carolina people and Charlotte people are very loyal people, so when they feel like their loyalty has been broken, you have to work hard to regain that loyalty. Now, as an insider, I have the authority to kind of change the script a little bit. That’s what I want to do."

"I have invested, so I feel like I’ve gained his trust that I can come down and utilize my efforts to try and make the situation better. I certainly didn’t come down here to lose my money, so I think Bob understands what it’s going to take. We’re friends enough, and it’s been proven enough, that I can say, ‘We need to change the focus in terms of how we attack making this a successful program.’ It’s not a knock on anyone. It’s a re-evaluation of what it’s going to take to try and make this team move in the right direction. I’m very confident that it can happen that way, or else I would have wasted my money. I don’t think I wasted my money."
