Matt Carroll is in his first summer league with the Charlotte Bobcats this year at the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City, Utah. The 6-6, 212-pound guard signed with the Bobcats on February 23 last season after starting the season in Roanoke of the NBDL. In 25 games, he averaged 9.0 points and 2.4 rebounds in 17.2 minutes. The 2005 NBDL Most Valuable Player and season scoring leader (20.1 points), Mattl reached double-figures 12 times for the Bobcats. He will be corresponding with BobcatsBasketball.com every day from Salt Lake City to give us his thoughts and give you, the fan, a closer look at what goes on during one of the top NBA summer leagues.

DAY 9, MATT'S REVUE WRAPUP: JULY 22, 2005

Our last day in Salt Lake City, Utah has arrived. I woke up and began to get ready for our final shootaround of the summer, and Coach J.B. actually cancelled it and told us to just be ready to leave for the game by 12:20 p.m. Since I was already awake, I went down stairs to eat some breakfast with Sean May. Sean and I talked about how the week was going and what the regular season was going to be like.

Before I left for the game, most of the Bobcats did not have to pack because we were coming back to the hotel after our game for a few hours since our flights were not leaving until later in the night. Today's game against the Atlanta Hawks was a tough game. At one point in the game, the Hawks were beating us by about 20 points. We kept fighting and cut their lead to nearly four points, but we just couldn't get the lead. Every time we made a run, Salim Stoudamire would hit a big shot to keep the lead for the Hawks. Stoudamire was making some tough shots, and we basically could not do anything to stop him.

Our whole team gave a strong effort and didn't give up, which is expected, since Bobcats basketball is based around playing hard and never giving up. One thing that Coach Bickerstaff has instilled and we developed last year was that we bring it every night and are always ready to play hard and compete, win or lose. Even though we lost our last game and we finished with a 4-2 record, we took home first place in the Rocky Mountain Revue. Utah beat San Antonio in their final game, and it helped us clinch first place. My man, Sean May, took home the Rocky Mountain Revue MVP honors, while Raymond Felton and myself earned First Team All-Revue for our play this week.

After our game, we went back to the hotel, packed up our rooms and left for the airport. Most of us were flying to Las Vegas then taking the red eye home to the East Coast. I finally landed in Philly at around 7:30 a.m. I knew today was going to be a struggle to stay awake, since I did not sleep at all on the flight home.

Well friends, that wraps up my 2005 summer league experience with the Charlotte Bobcats. This was my first time ever really writing a journal, and at first, I did not know what to expect. But I can honestly say that I have enjoyed doing this and plan to continue to keep all of our dedicated Bobcat fans in the loop with an inside look at Bobcats basketball once the regular season begins in a few months. I want to thank all of the Bobcats fans that have read my Day in Revue for all your support. I wish all of you a great rest of the summer, and I look forward to seeing and hearing you all next season in Charlotte.

Until then, God Bless!
Matt

DAY 8: JULY 21, 2005

The Bobcats came up with another big win today against the Seattle SuperSonics. Our record is now 4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Revue. Our game was at 2:00 p.m. (MST) again, so we had our usual schedule. We had shootaround at 8:30 a.m. and were on the court for about an hour. We reviewed our offensive sets and defensive principles. All the players were a little tight and stiff from the day off yesterday. I think all coaches get a little worried when their team comes back after a day off. Most people would not think that one day off would affect us, but it actually does. It just takes longer to get loose and warm our bodies up, but after we break a sweat, our legs feel fresh and ready to roll.

After shootaround, most of the Bobcats ate breakfast together at the hotel buffet. In the beginning of the week all of us liked the buffet, but after a good solid week, the selection is starting to all look the same. I am ready for a change of scenery. Tomorrow is our last day in Utah, so I am sure it will be an emotional day for everyone knowing that we will be leaving “good old Salt Lake City.”

When I ride over to our game, I usually ride with Coach J.B, Coach Brokaw and Terrance Simmons. It is kind of ironic because Coach J.B. and Terrance were teammates at Minnesota, and Coach Brokaw and I both played basketball at Notre Dame but were not teammates. It is funny listening to J.B. and Terrance tell stories of their college days while making fun of each other. Coach Brokaw and I also have similar memories of certain places and people at Notre Dame.

We figured today’s game against Seattle was going to be a tough one since we already beat them once. It was a very physical game, and the refs called a ton of fouls. I am always a little biased to our team and feel like the refs made some bad calls against the Bobcats, but I am sure that Seattle feels that the refs made horrible calls against them, as well. The score was fairly even in the beginning, but we opened it up a little to end the half. Raymond Felton played a great game today. He shot the ball great, passed well and grabbed a few rebounds, too. The rest of our team played solid, and Bernard (Robinson) hit some big shots down the stretch. I got to the foul line 14 times today, which is a lot, but I was frustrated that I missed four foul shots. Nothing makes me more upset than when I miss a free throw. I feel like a foul shot is a free point and that I should never miss one, but obviously, that is impossible. Seattle made a couple of runs in the second half, but we hung on to get the win.

After the game, we headed back to the hotel and a bunch of us went out to dinner at this Mexican restaurant down by the Delta Center. After dinner we decided to check out another movie. We saw “Batman Begins,” and I thought it was a very good movie. I am a big Batman fan as it is, but I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was interesting how they explained how he became Batman.

Once we got back to the hotel, I was surprised to see a huge outdoor concert going on outside. I checked it out for a bit and then headed back to my room. It is hard to believe that tomorrow is our last game of the summer league. I have had a lot of fun playing this summer and spending time with all the Bobcats people (teammates, coaches and trainers). I feel very comfortable with Bobcat basketball after playing this summer, and I am now looking forward to starting training camp in the fall. I officially have not signed my contract for next season to play for the Bobcats, but I have developed a liking for this organization and hope this is where I end up playing for a long time.

Have a great day,
Matt

DAY 7: JULY 20, 2005

Today was a low-keyed and uneventful day for the Bobcats. The coaches gave us a day off from basketball to rest up for our last two games of the Rocky Mountain Revue. Today, I ate some breakfast with a couple of my teammates, Terrance Simmons, Antonio Meeking and Alan Anderson. I used today to catch up on all of my phone calls and e-mails. Playing games at 2:00 p.m. (MST) doesn’t give me much time to call people because of the two-hour time difference out here in Utah. I spent a good couple of hours this afternoon on the phone and e-mailing people.

I decided to lift some weights in the hotel weight room and then did a little workout in the pool. I like working out in the water, because it is very easy on your body. I try to do a lot of stretching. I believe it prevents injury, and my body feels extremely loose when I’m done. My mom used to be a big-time swimmer when she was younger, and she taught me how to swim at a young age. Swimming is a great way to stay in shape and get a good cardio workout. Most people do not realize how tough swimming can be. Basketball players need to be able to run and play for a long period of time without loosing their breath or breathing too heavy. When players get injured, most of the rehab they do takes place in the water. Most NBA facilities have indoor pools with treadmills on the bottom of the pool to run on.

At night, I had a quick dinner, hung out with a few of my teammates and then watched some TV. Tonight, I am going to hit the sack early and rest up for our last two games. On Thursday, we play the Seattle SuperSonics again. Hopefully, the Bobcats will be ready to play.

Talk to you later,
Matt

DAY 6: JULY 19, 2005

Our fourth game of the summer league was this afternoon. I feel like today is sort of the hump day, meaning if we can get through today, we will only have two more games to play. We had a shootaround at 8:30 a.m. today. During shootaround, we didn’t do too much because the coaches wanted to save our legs. We reviewed our offensive sets and defensive rotations for most of the time. Also, we ran through the San Antonio Spurs offense to get us more familiar with their plays. A couple players were a little disappointed that we didn’t play a game of $100 knock-out. A lot of guys were very sore from the game yesterday, so we did a lot of stretching and used the foam rollers to try and push out some of the soreness in our legs.

After shootaround, we ate a little pregame meal at the hotel. Then I took a shower and got cleaned up for the game. With these 2:00 p.m. games, we do not have much time to relax before the game, especially when we have practice in the morning. Once I got my ankles taped, I headed to the lobby. Our team met there and left for our game against the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs were the only undefeated team left in the Rocky Mountain Revue. We were excited to play against the Spurs and wanted to give them their first loss. The game was close in the first half, but we had a five-point lead at halftime. In the second half, we built a nice lead and ended up holding on to win the game. Sean May played really well tonight by scoring in a variety of ways. The rest of us Bobcats all played solid, and a few of us scored around nine or 10 points and played well. We should be in first place of the summer league now, if not tied for first. If we win these next two games, we should have a good chance at winning the Rocky Mountain Revue. Our team is starting to play well together, and I feel like we are getting more comfortable playing together each game.

Following the game, I went out to get a bite to eat with some of my teammates. It is always funny when a bunch of basketball players walk into a restaurant together, especially when we have a couple seven-footers with us. There is always a bunch of people who come up to us and say, “ Do you guys play basketball?” I can not tell you how many times we get asked that question. I think people just like to ask us questions even though they basically know we play basketball, considering we are all very tall and wearing Charlotte Bobcats basketball gear.

Later that night, I went out to eat with my agent, Dan Fegan, and another one of his clients, Kris Humphries. We ate at a steakhouse called Fleming’s, which was a good spot. Dan flew in from L.A. to see my game and talk to (Head Coach & General Manager) Bernie Bickerstaff about next season.

When I got back to my hotel room, I had a lot of voicemails and e-mails from my friends. I guess one of my buddies found out I was writing a journal on the Bobcats website, and then all my boys found out about it. All it takes it one of my buddies to find before all of them know what’s going on. My college roommates, friends from Pittsburgh, boys from Philly and relatives all seemed to find out on the same day. I wanted to give a shout out to all my friends and family and let them know that I appreciate all the funny messages today. Well, you know what time it is?

Talk to you later,
Matt

DAY 5: JULY 18, 2005

Today I think the whole Bobcats team felt refreshed and much better thanks to our nice day off. Instead of having a shootaround in the morning, Coach J.B. decided to have a film session since we had a 2:00 p.m. (MST) game. Watching film after a loss is never an enjoyable experience. The coaches wanted us to watch the second half of our Utah Jazz game, and obviously, that was our bad half. The purpose of watching game tapes is to learn from your mistakes and to see why we made some mistakes. I actually don’t mind watching film. I believe that it can only help me improve and correct the things I am doing wrong and also allows our team to see what we are doing right. However, the coaches usually point out a lot more of the things our team needs to improve on, rather than what we are doing well. One thing we noticed that we did not do in the Utah game was reverse the ball. Our team was settling for quick and easy shots, which lets the defense off the hook. They do not have to work that hard on the defensive end if we take quick shots all the time.

After our film session, our usual crew and a few other Bobcat teammates went down the hotel restaurant to eat some breakfast. The Atlanta Hawks and the San Antonio Spurs are also staying in our hotel, so we always bump into a few of those players in the restaurant. Following breakfast, we only had about an hour to get ready for our game. We had to go get our ankles taped at 11:00 a.m. and be on the road heading to our game by Noon. The one thing I like about having the early game at 2:00 p.m. is that we get more time to warm since we are the first game of the day. If you play the 4:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. game, you only get about 10 minutes to get loose before the game, and that is not much time at all. I like to get a bunch of shots up before I play a game, and it is impossible to get lots of shots up in a few minutes.

Today we played the Dallas Mavericks. I recognized a few players on the Mavericks and talked to a few guys that I haven’t seen in few years. Every team that we play, I know a decent of amount of the players on each team. I either have played with or against mostly all the players we have played against, which makes each time we play a new team pretty cool. I get to catch up and see how they are all doing. During the NBA season, all the players basically know everyone in the entire league and usually have a few friends that we might go out to eat with when we go to their city or they come to ours. The unique thing about the NBA summer league is that a lot of the players playing did not play in the NBA during the regular season, so I am always interested to see where the familiar faces were playing last year.

The Mavericks center was about 7-5 and, surprisingly, could move well. At the beginning of our game, the score was close, but we went on a big run to end the half and got a nice lead. I scored a quick nine points in the last two minutes of the half. The wild thing about basketball is that I could go the first eight minutes of a quarter and not score a point and then score nine consecutive points in less than two minutes. That is why you always have to be ready and stay focused in the game, because you never know when your time is going to come. That is how the flow of the game is sometimes. During the second half, we held on to the lead and ended up winning by six points, 85-79. Our team executed our offensive sets much better this game. We had a total team effort today, and I thought a lot of players played well for us like, Raymond (Felton), B-Rob (Bernard Robinson), Antonio (Meeking) and Terrance (Simmons). I was proud of our team. We came back after Saturday’s loss and played hard to get this win against the Mavericks.

When I was walking out of the gym to our cars, my fiancée, Melanie, called me and said that her sister, Jen, just gave birth to a baby boy named Jason Thomas Bailey. Melanie was so excited for her sister and brother-in-law, Jimmy, because this was their first kid. Melanie put Jimmy on the phone and I said congratulations to him and Jen. The first thing Jimmy said to me was, ”Man, it was unbelievable. It was just unbelievable.” Then, in his next breath, Jimmy said,” So did you guys win, and how did you play today?” I guess all men are the same when it comes to sports, no matter what the circumstances are.

Later that night, I had dinner with two of my teammates, Tommy Smith and Kevin Burleson. We ate some Italian food and then we went to the movies to see “Wedding Crashers”. That movie was absolutely hilarious. I haven’t laughed that hard during a movie in a long time. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are so funny, and then my man Will Farrell made a surprise appearance towards the end of the movie and was his normal hysterical self. After the movies we headed back to hotel and it was time to “Shut it Down”.

Peace,
Matt

DAY 4: JULY 17, 2005

A day of no basketball is what the Bobcats had today. The coaches gave us a day off from basketball to get some rest and relaxation. The purpose of a day off is to give our bodies a day to recover and heal some of the minor injuries we sustain during our games. It is also intended for us to clear our heads and mentally refocus on our upcoming game. For me, a day off helps to rejuvenate my body and mind. Usually all it takes is 24 hours away from basketball, and I am itching to get back on the court. I try to eat some healthy meals and drink lots of fluids to help my body replace everything it lost in the last couple of games.

Today I slept in a little later than usual since we didn’t have to wake up at a specific time. It is always a nice feeling when I can put the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the outside of my hotel room door so the cleaning staff doesn’t wake me up. After I had some breakfast, I bumped into a few friends who were with the San Antonio Spurs organization. My rookie season I played with the San Antonio Spurs for the second half of the season and thought we were going to win a World Championship, but thanks to Derek Fisher, it didn’t work out that way. While I was playing for the Spurs, I developed a great respect for Tim Duncan. Not only is Tim Duncan one of the best basketball players in the world, but he is also one of the most down to earth and coolest guys I have ever met. Tim treats all people with respect and does not act like he is bigger and better than any of his teammates. I believe that because of Tim’s demeanor and leadership, all his teammates respect him. That is why the Spurs have had so much success.

I decided to take a little tour of Salt Lake City because I get bored easy and can’t just sit in my hotel room all day. I took a train down to the Delta Center, where the Utah Jazz play their regular season games, and it is actually a pretty happening part of town. There is an outdoor mall with all kinds of shops, a movie theater and some good restaurants. I bought a few new DVD’s to watch on my flight home from Utah to Philly. After walking around for about an hour, I had to head back to the hotel because it was too hot. I was sweating so much that I felt like I just finished playing a game.

As I was walking back, I passed a huge water fountain that was filled with people running through it. I was about to run through it, too, because I was so hot, but right as I was about to take off, I realized I was probably a little too old to be running through a water fountain. Also, it crossed my mind that if one of the Bobcat coaches saw me running through a water fountain, they probably wouldn’t be too happy about that. I think I made the right decision. On my way back to the hotel, I was going to stop and get some lunch, but for some reason all the restaurants were closed. Don’t ask me why everything was closed, but it must be a Utah thing or something I guess. I settled for some delicious room service instead, and that still hit the spot.

Around 3:00 p.m. I got a phone call from our trainer, Joe Sharpe, and he asked me if I had any interest in playing golf. I said why not? Joe Sharpe (Head Trainer), Mark Coffelt (Trainer), B.J. Evans (Public Relations Manager) and I went out to smack a few balls on the course. We played a course that was about 30 minutes from our hotel called Thanksgiving Point. It was a very nice golf course. We all had to rent clubs, and I bought a hat and some lotion so I wouldn’t get sunburned. With my pale, Irish skin, the sun can be kind of brutal on me since I am usually in the gym playing basketball and not outside in the sun very much. We all had a lot of fun playing golf. The course wasn’t very crowded, which was nice because we didn’t have to hurry and could just take our time and enjoy the game. I only lost three balls today, which is pretty good for me. Usually when I play golf back home, I never beat my dad, but my brother Pat and I have some pretty good battles. Mark Coffelt was the winner in today’s game, so unfortunately, the Bobcats training staff got the best of the Bobcat players, of which I was the sole representative. Although, I didn’t find out until after the match that Mark played golf in college, so he probably should have won anyway. B.J. was my partner, and he thought it would be funny to drive our golf cart through a couple of sprinklers on the 9th hole that ended up soaking us. But to be honest, it was kind of refreshing.

Later that night, I just made a few calls and watched the ESPY’s with Sean May. Sean was nominated for an ESPY award, so he was in attendance last Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Sean had some funny stories about what happened at the ESPY’s and all the celebrities that he met. He was surprised at how many celebrities knew who he was, but I told him that he got more exposure in the NCAA tournament than most professional athletes. I mean everybody from males, females, kids and adults watch the NCAA tournament - especially if you make it to the Final Four and win it all. That’s it for now, I have to get some sleep for our game tomorrow.

I’ll be back,
Matt

DAY 3: JULY 16, 2005

Today was basically the same schedule as yesterday, since we had another game at 6:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. EST). I woke up and went down to grab a juice and bagel from Starbucks, and we loaded into the cars and headed over to shootaround. During shootaround, we ran through a lot of the Utah Jazz plays after the Bobcats coaches had a chance to scout the Jazz yesterday. It took a few players a bit to understand how we were going to guard the Jazz, but eventually we all got it. After we finished reviewing all the Utah Jazz plays, we ran through our offensive sets. Then we broke up into our shooting groups where we play games of competition shooting with two or three players per group. My group was just Antonio Meeking and myself. Each group shoots from a specific spot on the floor and the first team to make 10 shots wins, then you move to the next spot. When we finished the shooting games, Head Coach Bernie Bickerstaff pulled a $100 bill out of his wallet and said to play one game of knock-out and the winner gets $100. Knock-out is a game that I played as a kid growing up and still enjoy playing today. Terrance Simmons won the game of knock-out and got a crisp Benjamin for winning.

During the offseason, my brother Pat and I run basketball camps throughout the Philadelphia area. I have to admit that knock-out is definitely a camp favorite. All the information about our basketball camps is found on our website at carrollcamps.com, so check it out. After shootaround, Sean May, Alan Anderson and I had brunch at our favorite buffet again. A little girl came up to us and asked for our autographs. I asked her how old she was and where she was from. She said she was 8 years old and from Denver, America, which I thought was pretty funny. After we ate, I just relaxed in my room for a while, talked on the phone, watched some TV, and did some reading.

When 3:30 p.m. hit, I went up to our trainer, Joe Sharpe’s room, got my ankles taped by Mark Coffelt and just chilled there until it was time to leave for the game. One thing I can sincerely say about the Bobcat organization is that it is full of great people who are all fun to be around. I enjoy hanging out with everybody from our trainers, to the coaches, front office staff, public relations people, video coordinators and players.

Since we were playing the home team tonight, the Utah Jazz, they stuck us in the tiniest locker room in the whole facility. Our whole team could barely even fit in it. The Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks were playing before us, so we only had 10 minutes to warm up before our game started. All the players tried to stretch in the hallway as best we could before we took the floor. The game was sold out and the fans were very loud, so it was a fun atmosphere to play in because it actually felt like a real game. We knew it was going to be a tough game and probably weren’t going to get many calls and unfortunately, that is how the game ended up. The game was very sloppy and neither team really got into a nice flow offensively. The refs called a ton of fouls, which is alright when they are called on both ends, but the Jazz got to the foul line almost twice as much as we did. Raymond Felton did not play tonight, and not having him in the line-up to run our team definitely hurt us. Utah is a good defensive team and played us well to their credit. We definitely did not play one of our better games and surprisingly, we still had a chance to win the game. We ended up losing, and our team was frustrated. We knew we could of played better and felt the refereeing was one-sided, but we still could of won despite all that.

The game of basketball is a crazy game that can make you frustrated at times. I love the game of basketball, but sometimes I just can not understand it. One day our team is playing great and everything seems to be clicking, and the next day everyone is struggling and can’t get into a rhythm. Well, I guess that is why we play the games, because you never know what is going to happen, which also makes basketball and most other sports exciting. One thing I have learned from playing basketball is that you can not dwell on a game or what happens in the past. I always try to move forward and learn from past games, make some corrections and get ready for the next game. In the NBA, we play so many games in such a short period of time that if you hang on to your frustration of a previous game for too long, it will affect your next game. Although, I like the fact that in the NBA we play a lot of games because you are able to move on to the next game quickly. In football, you only have one game per week. That would drive me crazy if we lost a game and couldn’t make up for it for an entire week.

After the game, Sean May and I went out to eat at a restaurant called P.F. Chang’s. P.F. Chang’s is one of my favorite restaurants, so I always get a little excited when they have one in the city that we are playing. I enjoy hanging out with Sean because he is a real good person and easy to get along with. Sean told me how mad he gets when he loses a game. I can remember when I was in college and if we lost a game at Notre Dame, I felt like the world was going to end. I’m sure that is how Sean feels now. I told Sean that he is probably going to lose a few more games in his pro career than he did at UNC, but he has to learn from the loses and move on to the next game because we play so many games in the NBA. Well that is it for tonight ladies and gentleman. See you all tomorrow - same time, same place!

Matt

DAY 2: JULY 15, 2005

Game time, baby! I woke up today at 7:30 a.m., walked down to the Starbucks connected to our hotel and grabbed a bagel and orange juice. The Bobcats jumped in our cars and headed off to shootaround at Salt Lake City Community College. I could tell that all the players were a little hyped up this morning because we finally get a chance to play against a new team. A week of straight practice and beating up the same guys every day gets a little old, so it is time we start competing against some different players. As we were walking into the gym for shootaround, Coach Gary Browkaw and I were talking about how Utah seems like it is always sunny, blue skies and hot - very hot - every day. I told Coach that I could probably get a tan just walking from the car to the gym it is so hot and sunny here.

We were on the floor for about an hour during shootaround trying to sharpen our offensive sets and defensive rotations. I can remember my rookie year, and it is a big transition coming from college to the NBA because the style of basketball is different. In college most teams have a set offense that they run most of the time and maybe have a few sets that they use throughout the game. The NBA has more specific sets designed for certain players to get the ball in a particular spot on the floor. The NBA game deals more with isolations and two-man games, while the other players on the floor make reads based upon what the player with the ball does. But the reality of it is, whether you are playing in high school, college, or the NBA, it is still basketball. I think the reason Raymond (Felton) and Sean (May) are picking things up so quickly is because they both have a good feel for the game of basketball. I have been impressed with our young players and how they have adapted to the NBA game.

Following shootaround, Coach J.B. told the team that it is a team rule that cell phones are not allowed during game days. We can not use our phones on the way to and from shoot around and on the way to the game or you get fined. So my advice to the rookies is to just leave their phone off, because even if a coach or trainer hears your phone ring, you still get fined. Unless they want to make a donation the Bobcats, it is best to just leave it off and focus on the game. During my rookie season when I was playing with the Portland Trailblazers, I forgot to turn my phone off and of course it started ringing while Coach Maurice Cheeks was giving us our pregame talk. He just looked at me like I was crazy.

Sean May, Alan Anderson and I had a brunch buffet at the hotel's restaurant, and yes, we did some damage to that buffet. I wouldn’t be surprised if the hotel decides to raise the price of the buffet, because all the players will definitely be getting their money's worth. During the afternoon I just relaxed in my room for a few hours and listened to music while reading a book. We left for our game around 4:30 p.m. and were the first game of the summer league. Before the game, I had to take a couple photos for the NBA to promote the NBADL (National Basketball Association Development League) since I was the league’s MVP last season.

Our first game of the summer was against the Seattle Supersonics. Every player is a little nervous and anxious, especially before the first game, because no one really knows what to expect. But once the game starts, everyone seems to relax a little and start playing ball. I thought we played pretty well considering it was our first game. We were beating Seattle for most of the game and ended up winning the game pretty convincingly at the end. Well, I would like to talk more about the game, but I am really tired and I figure you can just read the about the game on BobcatsBasketball.com. After the game, we all went out to eat at Applebee’s. Well, I am about to fall asleep so I’m out of here!

Good night,
Matt

DAY 1: JULY 14, 2005

Today was a long and boring travel day. Our team left the Hyatt hotel in Charlotte at 9:30 a.m. It was sad to leave the Hyatt Hotel in Charlotte since I have spent over 40 days there since I joined the Bobcats back in February. I feel like I know every person who works in the hotel, from the people at the front desk to the chefs. I have spent so much time at the Hyatt that the room service staff knows what I am going to order before I even tell them.

As, the team was waiting in line to go through the security check at the airport, it brought back memories of when I played basketball at the University of Notre Dame because we usually flew commercial when we traveled to away games. During the NBA season we travel in charter planes, which is a pretty nice and convenient way to travel. Even though we are not chartering to Utah, we still get to sit in first class and enjoy a few extra snacks and more legroom. My dad frequently reminds my brother Pat and I that, “You two boys are living, I’ll tell you.” I think my dad gets a little fired up about Pat and I flying first class because he was been working for over 30 years for the same company and still doesn’t get to fly first class. Pat is a rookie from St. Joseph’s University and is playing for the Houston Rockets this summer. I was hoping we would get a chance to play against each other, but the Rockets are in the Minnesota summer league.

Our flight connected in Atlanta and then we flew to Salt Lake City, Utah. I think most of the guys on the team were a little disappointed that we were not playing in the Las Vegas summer league. Don’t get me wrong, Utah is a beautiful state and the Rocky Mountain Revue is a great summer league, but I think if we took a vote most of the players on the team would probably pick Las Vegas over Salt Lake City for whatever reasons. Everyone on the Bobcats summer league team realizes that this is a big opportunity and chance to get some exposure from several NBA teams, so maybe its better we aren’t playing in Las Vegas, considering this is a business trip and not a vacation.

Once we landed in Salt Lake City we jumped on the bus and headed to our hotel. We quickly dropped our bags off in our rooms and got dressed and taped for practice. Our team took a few different vans and SUV’s over to practice, and I was driving with Assistant Coach (Jeff) Capel. We typed in the address of our practice site to the navigation system and somehow it led us to the wrong destination. But with Coach Capel’s good sense of direction and the help of Joe Sharpe, we found the gym.

We had a good practice despite the long day of traveling. Coach J. B. (Bickerstaff) put in a few more defensive sets, and we worked on our offensive execution for most of the time. After practice we headed back to the hotel and I ordered some room service. Now it is time for me to lay it down and get some shuteye.

Talk to you tomorrow,
Matt
