The Charlotte Bobcats teamed with Hands on Charlotte to give the Little Creek Community Garden a new look on April 1 as part of NBA Green Week 2010.

Stephen Jackson, Nazr Mohammed, Theo Ratliff and Gerald Wallace, along with many Bobcats Sports & Entertainment staff members, took part in a community garden refurbishment project in the Uptown Charlotte area.

With the help of the Hands on Charlotte organization, players and staff created garden pots, built flower beds, put up fencing, created decorative murals and signs and spread mulch for the planting of fruits, vegetables and flowers for a much-deserving community.

"Giving back is always fun regardless of what you’re doing, and when it’s for a good cause," said Bobcats forward Stephen Jackson. "Helping get a garden together for the community is definitely needed. It’s a blessing, and I’m happy to be a part of it."

The garden will be used by the Belmont neighborhood residents, who will be able to pick fresh fruits and vegetables at no cost, as well as have a place they can come together as a community.

"I think the Bobcats are doing a great job in capturing the spirit of Green Week by helping an at-risk community like the Belmont community," said Hands on Charlotte's Bob Young. "It’s really about bringing people together and when the Bobcats can share in that, it’s fantastic."

The Lady Cats also joined in the fun, creating decorative art pieces for the garden.

"I hope this will bring this community closer together," said Jackson. "They’ll have something in common now - this community garden. This will bring this community closer and help them work together and keep this garden going; and by me and Gerald (Wallace) being out here shows that anybody can take time out their day and come and help and give back to a community that supports us."
