Solar panels and recycling bins are becoming as common as hot dog vendors for professional sports teams and their venues, according to a report released today by the Natural Resources Defense Council, in collaboration with the Green Sports Alliance. The new report documents innovative and cost-effective steps taken across all professional leagues, revealing the Portland Trail Blazers as a national leader in the sports greening movement. In January 2010, the Trail Blazers’ Moda Center Arena became the first professional sports arena in the world to achieve LEED Gold certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Existing Buildings standard, making the team national leaders in green building design.

“The Portland Trail Blazers are indisputably among the most progressive and accomplished teams in the world of sports when it comes to environmental initiatives. Not just in the NBA, but in all sports. They were the first professional sports arena to achieve LEED Gold Certification and they co-founded the Green Sports Alliance. Through their leadership in recycling, energy efficiency, transportation, and ecologically smart purchasing the Trail Blazers have helped move the entire NBA towards a deeper engagement in the environmental issue, and in so doing the Trail Blazers are leading one of the most important collaborations, sports and environmentalism, in our society.”

Trail Blazers joined forces with northwest-based teams from six professional sports leagues to launch the Green Sports Alliance. Spearheaded by owner, Paul Allen, the Alliance was formed to help lead the effort for professional and collegiate sports leagues, teams and venues to enhance their impact on the environment. Alliance members now represent over 230 sports teams and venues from 20 sports leagues – a collaboration that is unprecedented.
