![]() The Portland Trail Blazers are the first major sports team to earn LEED Gold status for a major league sports facility, a milestone in the greening of sports, the team announced. "The Trail Blazers are proud to play a role in Portland's drive to be the greenest city in the country," said Larry Miller, president of the Portland Trail Blazers. "This announcement is a result of local expertise and innovation helping Portland foster a stronger, more sustainable economy. The new report documents innovative and cost-effective steps taken across all professional leagues, revealing the Portland Trail Blazers as a national leader in the sports greening movement. In January 2010, the Trail Blazers’ Rose Garden Arena became the first professional sports arena in the world to achieve LEED Gold certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Existing Buildings standard, making the team national leaders in green building design. “The Portland Trail Blazers are indisputably among the most progressive and accomplished teams in the world of sports when it comes to environmental initiatives. Not just in the NBA, but in all sports. They were the first professional sports arena to achieve LEED Gold Certification and they co-founded the Green Sports Alliance. Trail Blazers joined forces with northwest-based teams from six professional sports leagues to launch the Green Sports Alliance. Spearheaded by owner, Paul Allen, the Alliance was formed to help lead the effort for professional sports leagues, teams and venues to enhance their impact on the environment.
