PORTLAND, Ore. - It wasn't picked up by a national network. It isn't necessarily hyped up as a big time showdown. But when the Portland Trail Blazers (12-3) and Memphis Grizzlies (13-2) meet on Friday night, it could go a long way towards setting the tone for the year.
Both teams enter Friday’s tilt red-hot; the Blazers, winners of nine in a row, and fresh off a 3-0 east coast road trip after Wednesday’s win over Charlotte, are looking for a double-digit winning streak for the second consecutive year. Last season, they won 11 straight in the first month of play as well.
Memphis, who beat the Los Angeles Lakers Wednesday, have won seven of their last eight, and currently hold the best record in the NBA. Portland is just one game back.
Defense has been the Grizzlies’ calling card the past few seasons and, through 15 games, nothing has seemed to change. They rank third in points allowed at 92.4. The offense has been steady, scoring 99.9 points per game, but this is a franchise that will win by smothering opponents – which is the challenge that awaits the Blazers.
To say that this matchup will be strength-vs-strength comes off a bit cliché, however, Portland’s ability to score will be the biggest factor in the outcome. During their current streak, the Blazers are averaging 107 points per game. Over their last six games, the Grizzlies are giving up just 94.5.
Portland, after last season’s surprising run to the Western Conference semifinals, entered the season with increased expectations and pressure. After a 1-2 start, things have clicked on all cylinders, albeit against competition that won’t blow your hair back.
Memphis offers a huge uptick in that category. They provide an opportunity for the Blazers, 8-1 at home, to knock off one of the league’s elite.
For Memphis, perhaps the most under-appreciated team in the NBA, a win over the Blazers would solidify their hot start.
It may not have received much attention when the schedule was released. However, one month into the season, two surprising teams will square off, with bragging rights and a message to send on the line.
