Trail Blazers Get First 2014 Summer League Win Over Rockets
CJ McCollum leads the way with 19 in the win over Houston
The Portland Trail Blazers hung on to a 75-67 victory over the Houston Rockets at the Samsung NBA Summer League 2014 despite trailing by seven points heading into the fourth quarter. The Blazers attack was a balanced one, with five players scoring in double figures. CJ McCollum led the Portland charge with 19 points in the victory.
Portland dominated much of the first half, but let Houston back into the game in the third quarter. Having trailed by as many as 11 points and being down 8 at halftime, the team from Texas embarked on an 18-2 run midway through the third to turn a 43-52 hole into a 61-54 lead to end the third period. The Rockets outscored Portland by 15, 28-13, during the fourth on the back of Andre Dawkins' three three-pointers in the frame.
Portland wouldn't let the game slip away that easily, though, as the team regained the lead, 68-67, with 2:26 left to play in the game on a Will Barton alley oop. They would never look back.
The Rockets got off to a sluggish start, shooting only 29 percent in the first quarter and falling behind 19-14 at the end of one. It was more of the same in the second, with Portland outscoring Houston 22-19 en route to the 41-33 halftime lead.
Nick Johnson scored 16 in defeat for Houston.
