Officials from the Portland Trail Blazers recently attended Portland City Council to accept an award for the organization’s commitment and support of Project Homeless Connect. As many of us head home after work or school each day, there are over 3,700 people in Portland that face homelessness. Of those more than 3,700, one-third are children. Due to a lack of resources throughout our community, an estimated 1,000 homeless people are turned away from housing and services every day. The Portland Trail Blazers are doing their part to make it better through their annual Harvest Dinner and production of a recruitment video stressing the need for all to team up against homelessness.

For the Portland Trail Blazers 11th annual Harvest Dinner Event, held in November of each year, the team and arena partnered with Project Homeless Connect, a collaborative effort between the City of Portland and Multnomah County focused on bringing critical services to homeless individuals and families with a ten-year goal to end homelessness in Portland. In addition to the annual holiday-style hot meal, other services provided to Harvest Dinner guests through Project Homeless Connect included haircuts, medical services, pet care, educational, legal and housing resources and job counseling. Over the past 5 years, the annual Harvest Dinner has served over 5,000 meals to Portland’s homeless community.

In December 2004, the City of Portland and Multnomah County released the 10-year Plan to End Homelessness, which included strategies and measurable goals for the plan’s duration. The strategy of the 10-year Plan to End Homelessness has been to focus on chronically homeless people who have the greatest needs and use the most resources.

"In two short years Project Homeless Connect has delivered on the promise to provide critical services and get homeless off the streets," said Mike Golub, Trail Blazers Executive Vice President or Business Affairs. "The team is proud of our partnership with the City and County and look forward to forging ahead in making the 10-year goal a reality."

The Portland Trail Blazers have created and produced a video in an effort to bring more awareness to Project Homeless Connect and to recruit other corporate sponsors to join the team in the campaign to end homelessness in Portland in 10 years.
