Trail Blazers To Play In Green Awareness Game on Monday

Fans encouraged to use 'earth-friendly' means to get to arena

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Trail Blazers will host a second annual "Green Awareness Game" on Monday, April 13 vs. Oklahoma City, in conjunction with the NBA's league-wide commitment to help raise awareness for Earth Month (April 2009) and to recognize and encourage Earth-friendly practices.

Fans are encouraged to be more Earth-friendly by biking, walking, taking public transportation or carpooling to Monday's game. The 100-level concourse will feature a Green Building Services booth (near entry A25) offering green tips and answering questions from fans.

With the help of Trail Blazers fans, the Rose Garden is currently diverting over 60 percent of waste from local landfills through recycling, thanks in large part to several Pacific Power Recycling Stations located throughout the 100- and 300-level concourses.

The team will wear 100 percent organic cotton warm-up shirts featuring the NBA Green logo during the game. The Trail Blazers Fan Shop will have official size and weight NBA basketballs made from 40 percent recycled rubber available for purchase.

Pacific Power, which provides 100 percent renewable energy to the Rose Garden through its Blue Sky program, is providing additional awareness efforts during the game. The company will give away reusable grocery bags for selected fans throughout the night.

Forward Channing Frye, who offers 'Green Tips' on his personal website, will serve as the Trail Blazers' "Green Awareness Game" spokesperson. Frye will continue to spearhead the message that a better future depends upon developing habits and practices that lessen the impact on our ecological systems.

"Just being part of the community has raised my awareness about green issues and really encouraged me to do whatever I could to be one with nature," Frye said. "Hopefully, we can use our visibility as athletes to encourage even more people to be aware of the little things we can do to make a difference."

Frye was starred in a recent NBA TV feature recognizing Portland's sustainability initiatives, which can be viewed by clicking here.
