Dale Davis finished filming his movie "Playas Ball" over half a year ago. The movie was completed and put to bed almost five months before Lakers star Kobe Bryant was accused of raping a 19-year-old girl at a resort in Colorado.
Althought the movie was completed before the accusations made against Bryant, the stories have quite a bit in common. The plot of the film produced by Dale's company, follows a storyline that matches almost exactly to the recent accusations against Bryant.
Dale's production company, World Ain’t Right Entertainment told the media that when they were filming the movie, they told the lead role to take his direction from Kobe Bryant.
The start of the film is Allen Payne from
The Perfect Storm. When Payne discussed the role with the writer and director, Jennifer Harper, he wanted to know if the story had been based on a particular athlete. "I told him to think about Kobe Bryant while running his lines. He's an athlete that's loved by everybody and has major endorsements in several areas," said Harper.
The story is about a star athlete who comes into his prime early. Right aftersigning a shoe endorsement deal for major money, the athlete is received notice of a paternity suit by a woman he doesn’t know. He learns that if he doesn't settle out of court, the accusor will file rape charges.
The similiarity is eery as Bryant’s arrest occured only a few days after signing a contract with Nike for $45 million.
Dale created the movie to show the public how professional athletes can be exploited. “I respect what Kobe has stood for since he came into the league and the image he has portrayed. I hope the best for him, I really do," said Dale.
The movie was financed by Dale for less than $1 million. Although it hasn't been purchased by a major motion picture company, Dale hopes to sell it before the start of the Blazers season.
