Nash and Cheeks Talk Trade

December 3, 2003

Blazers General Manager John Nash and Head Coach Maurice Cheeks met with local media before the game tonight to answer questions about today's trade of Guard Bonzi Wells.

John Nash

Question: What was Bonzi's reaction to the trade?
Nash: We spoke briefly on the phone, and he simply thanked me. He knew there was a possibility that this would go through.

Question: When did the trade talks begin?
Nash: After the suspension, Bonzi and his agent came to me, to see if something could be worked out. I had spoken with Jerry West previously about another trade possibility.

Question: How does this help the team?
Nash: The trade made sense from a salary cap perspective. We have another asset in the draft pick. And Wes Person brings good perimeter shooting to our team.

Maurice Cheeks

Question: Is this somewhat of a relief right now?
Cheeks: I wouldn't call it a relief. I believe that for both parties involved it's okay. This deal makes sense on the bottom line.

Question: How does this trade affect the amount of talent on the team?
Cheeks: Sometimes all the talent in the world does not mean you have a better basketball team. I think each player has their strong points and until we get Person on the court and practicing with the team, it will be hard to say.

Question: How was your relationship with Bonzi before the trade?
Cheeks: I believe we had a good relationship before the suspension, and still a pretty good one afterward.
