Jerryd Bayless added to USA Basketball Select Team

Bayless, along with fellow Trail Blazer LaMarcus Aldridge, to train with USA Men’s Senior National Team in Las Vegas

Jerryd Bayless, the No. 11 draft choice in the 2008 NBA Draft, became the 13th player to be named to the 2008 USA Basketball Select Team , USA Basketball announced Sunday

Bayless, who was traded to Portland after being selected by Indiana in the 2008 Draft, has had a spectacular showing in the 2008 NBA Summer League. Playing in four games, Bayless averaged a Summer League best 29.8 ppg. on 48.5 percent shooting, and also posted 4.8 rpg., 1.3 apg., and 1.2 spg. As an Arizona freshman point guard, Bayless led the Wildcats in scoring averaging 19.7 points per game. He was selected All-Pac-10 second team and All-Freshman Team. He also earned All-District honors from the NABC and USBWA and was named All-American honorable mention by The Associated Press. Bayless boasts of prior USA Basketball experience. He scored 15 points for the USA Basketball Junior National Select Team that defeated the World Select Team at the 2007 Nike Hoop Summit in Memphis, Tenn. He also averaged 11.0 points and 4.3 rebounds on the gold-medal winning USA Team at the 2006 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men in San Antonio, Texas.

The USA Select Team is comprised of top young NBA talent and it will be utilized to help prepare the 2008 USA Men’s Senior National Team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Also included on the USA Basketball Select Team roster is: LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trail Blazers); Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City NBA); Jeff Green (Oklahoma City NBA); Luther Head (Houston Rockets); Al Horford (Atlanta Hawks); Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers); Robin Lopez (Phoenix Suns); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Kevin Martin (Sacramento Kings); O.J. Mayo (Memphis Grizzlies); Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls) and Rodney Stuckey (Detroit Pistons).

As was the case last summer, Oklahoma City head coach P.J. Carlesimo, who served as an assistant with the 1992 U.S. Olympic "Dream Team" and who has been a head or assistant coach of six other USA Basketball teams, will serve as head coach of the USA Select Team and assisting Carlesimo for a second straight summer is Toronto Raptors assistant coach Jay Triano.

The select squad will begin training July 20 in Las Vegas and is expected to train and scrimmage against the USA Senior National Team from July 21-24.

The Americans will cap the Las Vegas portion of its training on July 25 (5 p.m. Las Vegas local time) with the 2008 State Farm USA Basketball Challenge where the USA will meet the Canadian National Team at Thomas & Mack Center.

After playing four games between July 31- Aug. 5 that are part of the USA Basketball International Challenge in Macao and Shanghai, China, the United States will arrive in Beijing, Aug. 6.

Preliminary round play of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games takes place Aug. 10-18. The U.S., which was placed in preliminary Group B, opens preliminary play Aug. 10 against host China at 10:15 p.m. (all times listed are Beijing local times which is 12 hours ahead of EDT); then play Africa zone champion Angola on Aug. 12 at 8:00 p.m.; on Aug. 14 at 8:00 p.m. the USA will face Qualifier C who will be determined through the July 14-20 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament; 2006 FIBA World Champion Spain on Aug. 16 at 10:15 p.m.; and the USA will close out preliminary play Aug. 18 at 8:00 p.m. against Qualifier B who will be determined through the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

The men’s Olympic quarterfinals action takes place Aug. 20, semifinals play is slated for Aug. 22and the Olympic men’s gold and bronze medal games will be held Aug. 24.

Named to the 2008 USA Basketball Senior National Team were: Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets); Carlos Boozer (Utah Jazz); Chris Bosh (Toronto Raptors); Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers); Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic); LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers); Jason Kidd (Dallas Mavericks); Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets); Tayshaun Prince (Detroit Pistons); Michael Redd (Milwaukee Bucks); Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat); and Deron Williams (Utah Jazz).

Duke University Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski is head coach of the USA Senior Team program. Serving as assistant coaches are Syracuse University and Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, New York Knicks head mentor Mike D’Antoni and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Nate McMillan.
