Jack to the rescue as Trail Blazers hold off Clippers

The Trail Blazers needed someone to step up in the absence of their All-Star shooting guard Brandon Roy. Jarrett Jack answered the call.

Jack tied a season high with 21 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, as he led the Portland Trail Blazers to an 82-80 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Jack came off the bench and also grabbed eight rebounds as the Trail Blazers managed to win one of their two consecutive games at the Staples Center.

Martell Webster had 15 points, five rebounds and three steals as he started at shooting guard in place of the injured All-Star Roy.

Corey Maggette scored 32 points for the Clippers, but missed a potential go-ahead basket with six seconds remaining as Los Angeles lost at home to Portland for the first time in eight games.

Tim Thomas sank two free throws with 5:28 left in the third to cap a 16-3 Clippers run, tying the score at 45-45. But the Blazers took a 58-57 lead into the fourth after the newest Trail Blazer, Von Wafer, hit a three-pointer with one second on the clock.

The lead changed seven more times before Jack's 3-pointer gave Portland a 75-73 lead with 3:41 to play. Cuttino Mobley responded with a 3-pointer 16 seconds later, but LaMarcus Aldridge sank two free throws and added a short baseline hook to give Portland a 79-76 edge with 1:36 left.

After two free throws by Clippers rookie Al Thornton, Jack leaned back and drained a fadeaway 22-footer from the top of the key to give Portland an 81-78 lead. Maggette hit a 13-footer, and the Clippers had a chance to go back in front when Jack missed two free throws with 11.1 seconds to go. But Maggette grazed the rim from 15 feet on a wide-open shot after losing Travis Outlaw.

Wafer made one of two at the other end, and Maggette was way off from 33 feet on an off-balance attempt at a buzzer-beating 3-point attempt.

The Trail Blazers had five players in double-figures, three coming off the bench. Along with Jack's 21 points, Wafer scored 11 points in his first game action in a Trail Blazers uniform. Wafer played over 31 minutes, grabbing five rebounds and making two of five attempts from three-point range.

Portland is 10th overall in the Western Conference, four and a half games behind Denver and five behind Golden State for the eighth and final seed.

Roy, Portland's leading scorer, stayed home for the trip to Los Angeles in order to rest his sprained right ankle, which he reaggravated in Sunday's loss against Boston.

The Trail Blazers will play their third straight game against a team from Los Angeles on Friday when Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and the Lakers come to the Rose Garden for the first time this season.

The game is at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on KGW. As always, the game can be heard on 750am KXL. CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS
