I met Kevin a few times while I was in high school, also playing center on my basketball team. I found great inspiration in his play and his attitude. I was young when the Blazers made their runs at the title with Duckworth at the center, so I mostly have impressions of him as a player. But I love the Blazers and basketball because of that team. Duckworth was just a solid, grounded player and you always felt better about our chances with him on the floor. His passing is a huge, huge loss. -- Shua
Kevin Duckworth died today, he knew how to shoot, He really could play. The giant of a man died behind the door, but he gave his life out on the wood floor. They say he passed in the night, at the young strong age of 44.I hope our young team will look to him now, and have his life and death teach them how. Its hard to write feeling so uptight, I may be wrong, but i might be right. I was young when i watched him play so much. Portland shall never forget his touch. His legs reminded me of tree trunks. Are not you glad our teams not full of punks? Dear Duck;you were respected, loved, hope you are up above,so i can see you and we can play.We will have fun in the Son,till no end of days! -- Austin W

One day at the Rockler store in Beaverton I encountered Mr. Duckworth. A kind soul in a giant body.
When I heard of his untimely passing I created a token to mourn his loss. I would like to email a photo to add to the memorial for Mr. Duckworth but cannot find a way to submit a photo. Also, if anyone in the TrailBlazer organization would like to have the "token" I would gladly give it to them, no cost. Thanks and my condolences on your loss. -- Tom B

Honestly, I'm not the big basketball fan - I grew up with my dad watching it on tv though - and the 80's-early 90's are memorable to me... when I heard of the Ducks passing, I was saddened and only hope and pray that he smiling down from a great place. I will remember Kevin Duckworth as a warm "normal guy" you would see out at Washington Square or Fred Meyer... doing "normal people" things out in the crowd. He was a great athlete and an even greater gentleman. God Bless - my prayers go out to his family. -- Kathy
I just want to thank him for everything he has done for the game. -- Tom C from Germany

i met Kevin Duckworth at a Portland Barber shop where he just started talking to me about my cell phone. He was very friendly! it met a lot of the blazers and some were cool, but had a ego like pro athletes. Kevin did not have a ego or cockiness in his body. A great man!! -- Bobby

Kevin was a part of a magical time for Portland not just as a team but as a city as well. He will be missed by many not because of just how he played on the court but mostly his attitude and compassion off the court. Growing up here in Portland, Kevin was the Blazer I most identified with. You wanted to root for him. In getting to see him go through his NBA career here we had an inside view of the man that the rest of the country wasn't lucky enough to get to know like we did. I got to meet him once and I remember him being a very nice, quiet, accommodating guy. He really was just what I had thought that he would be like. This has been really tough to deal with. -- Scott

Sad time for his family and the blazer community. Will be missed by many. -- Carson B
he is dominating -- Dante M
Duck was one of those players; along with Clyde, Jerome, and Terry, that made you LOVE the team. I always liked how the duck calls would go off when he scored, and I remember in the playoffs when he was hurt and the big question would be if he was going to play..when he came out of the locker, I was so excited, along with everyone else. -- Matt
A gentle giant of man bless the Northwest from the moment he stepped onto this soil. I will never forget who he was as an athlete, nor how he conducted himself with such enormous compassion on and off the court. Nor will forget how he chose the path of peace over force, a way of life which creates a better world. He lived 'sportsmanship'. May his lessons be remembered as tribute to his exceptional life example. I wish I had known him personally. My greatest condolences to his family, friends, neighbors, and past teammates. Remember and live out his lessons. -- Evette B
I'll never forget Duck making his triumphant entrance after injury during the series against San Antonio back in the 90s. There was nothing like it - he'll be missed. -- Blueline
This is a very sad day as i just learn of the death of Kevin Duckworth, My deepest sympathy goes out to Kevin’s mother and sister and family and to the Trailblazers family and fans. I meet kevin with Al and Shawn in 1989 when they met me at Oregon hospital for kevin to help lift the spirits of a 17 year whom was fighting cancer. Kevin touched this individual in many ways before he past on. I saw Kevin again in my home town were they were playing exhibition game and kevin met me with a hug and kiss on the forehead with appreciation for being there. I held season blazers tickets from 1982-to 1994 and i witness the emotions and warmth of Kevin’s play especially during the conference championships in 1990 and 1992. The memorial service will be held in Portland on Saturday, aug 30th I am recovering from surgery and cannot attend but i hope all that cannot attend will join me with lighting a candle at the time of memorial service for honoring a wonderful caring individual in Kevin Duckworth- Kevin you will be truly missed -- Linda C, Coos Bay

It is sad to see a member of the Great Blazer team's die so early. I loved those teams. They were class on and off the court and Big Duck was a large part of that. He was good damm good and it is sad such a good person and great player like him has left earth. He is in a better place now and heaven benefits from our loss. R.I.P. DUCK-- Tim P

“00" I will always remember my dad taking me to see "DUCK" "BUCK" "The Glide", Terry and Jerome better known as the FAB 5 (1990) play at the Memorial Coliseum. "RIP CITY" An Experience never to be repeated. They were pros then and remain that way in my memories always. "BUST A BUCKET" Prayers for his family and hopes for his eternity.-- JnC57
I used to wait tables while getting finished up at school and once waited on "Duck". He came in with his two daughters and from the moment he stepped in you could hear whispers all over the restaurant. Not of people speaking of his weight (as this was in '06) but remembering the joy of watching him play and the best game they saw (2 different tables were at the Spurs Game 7). He had a great smile and was very kind when speaking to a "lowly" waiter. He made you feel like an equal amongst the giants. Truly one of the greatest experiences I've had in my life was meeting and talking with "Duck".
We'll miss you Kevin!-- Jonathan
R.I.P. Big Duck. I loved the Blazer teams you were a part of. I wish I would have asked you for your autograph when I rehabbed my pitching arm at Dr. Cook’s office. I used to watch the team come in the office in the morning after a game but was to shy to ask the players, for autographs.(Duck, Drexler, Porter, Jerome) any of them for an autograph. I was in awe. It was pretty cool watching most of the team come in the office for rehab after a game. Duck was nice a real nice man. It is a very sad day for the Blazer Nation. I wish his family well. Both Portland and Chicago lost a great man. I would have loved to fish with him on the Deschutes river. I still remember his G.I. Joe commercials. I never saw a 7 footer fish. It would have been fun.-- Tim P
You could always tell who Kevin Duckworth was walking into the rose garden, he helped with so many things and brought so much to our community ill just never forget walking up to him to get his autograph and he was laughing and having a good time with us, the fans, as he was collecting Christmas toys for kids that needed them. He was a big man but his character as a person was even bigger-- Justin W
I am so sorry for your loss. I am a huge blazer fanatic and always have been. My thought and prayers are with the Duckworth family-- Benjamin C

We had season tickets to Trailblazers when Kevin was playing. Also enjoyed food at his restaurant. He was a very kind "gentle giant"-- Sharon D
The 'Duck'. What a special human being he was with a huge heart. He exemplified the heart and soul of 'Rip City'. I grew up with the rip city team of the early 90s and Kevin Duckworth was the special soul in the middle that flicked up a sweet finger roll that barley disturbed the net. Swish. Kevin Duckworth will be remembered always. Miss ya big guy.-- Geoff S
I had the pleasure of getting to know Kevin on the EIU campus in the mid-80's where I was also a student. He was a great basketball player and an even better friend. I pray that the peace of God be on his family and friends.-- Cynthia B

Yo, what up duck? I remember watching you play when I was like five years old. It came as a shock to learn about your death, because I am studying down in Mexico so I don't get much Trail Blazer news. Anyway, you meant a lot to me growing up and I just wanted you to know that. R.I.P. Mr. Duck.-- Eric G
Rest in peace Kevin. We loved you, even here in Slovenia.-- 14act3
Will Duck's presence in our community. Never forget his sitting in for one of the pre game shows last season. It was a hoot to see him do the color commentary. Wonder his heart held up for that. He was so nervous that all he could do was smile a lot.-- Ray L
What a gentle giant thanks Duck for all the great memories you will be missed. Our prayers go out to your family in this hard time.-- Cliff G
We are devastated at the passing of Kevin. Lisa's mom, Dorothy Lowry was one of Kevins' high school English teachers. She was so proud of Kevin’s accomplishments and his being a spokesman for adult literacy. Lisa and I are also proud alumni of Eastern Illinois where we watched Kevin play. We also are Pacific Northwesters who watched him play professionally. We are profoundly sad. Our prayers go out to Kevin’s mom and sister.-- Phil & Lisa T

ME HICE AFICIONADO AL BASKET EN LA EPOCA EN QUE KEVIN ESTABA JUGANDO. GRACIAS POR LOS RECUERDOS DUCK-- Inaka
As a young Blazermaniac during the Duckworth era my favorite memories were sneaking backstage after the games as he & other players came out of the locker room. He was so friendly, despite me relentlessly hounding him for his game shoes or autograph, and I use to laugh cause he always had a Slim Fast in his hand. Oh, how we'll all miss him & those glory days.-- JP
From Spain. Thanks for the memories. The heaven-playground has got a great center.--Manuel H
HE WAS A GREAT MAN I LOVED TO SEE HIM PLAY AS A BULLS FAN!!!-- Raekwon G
We will truly miss this man. He was more important than the star of the team, he was the star of the community! We love you Duck!-- Noah T
You've been a wonderful part of our team and community and we will miss you dearly.-- Tracy R
You were truly the "Gentle Giant". Your presence on and off the court was felt throughout the area, and you epitomized what was great about the team from that era - character. You will be missed Duck, and the Blazers should do all that they can and then some to honor you.-- Madia S
I rooted for Duck every game he played in for the Blazers. Then, last year, in Seattle, I was waiting in line with my family for a passport. I recognized KD, he was with his family, and told my 8-yr old son who he was. My normally shy son walked up to Duck and said, "I want to play in the NBA someday too!" Kevin replied with some inspirational words to my son and then gave him a big hug. I shook his hand, thanked him for the great years, and wished him well. What I noticed that day is the smile on his face, the smile on his girlfriend's face, (who'd seen him do this for years) and understood how GENUINE he was.
My condolences to his family and the people close to him.
May the Lord Bless you as you have blessed us Kevin. Rest in Peace-- Jason S
The world was better because of DUCK! We will miss you!-- Robyn

you will be missed, my love to your family, be tough-- Ustin P
Duck!!!
It's amazing what you remember about a player and what they bring to a team. Remember that unique one handed jumper!!! He was undervalued as a player. He had the ability to stretch the defense with his ability to shoot beyond 15 ft. He was skilled with both hands, had great footwork, he wasn't a huge shot blocker but played good team and individual defense. He was a VITAL part of the Blazers success during those RIP CITY years. I have been listening to all the sports talk and hearing all the WONDERFUL memories that he brought to so many people. The biggest thing that everyone is saying and I have been honored to be included as one of those, is he was always kind to everyone. The room he was in always seemed to turn into a happier place. He was just another guy who happened to play professional basketball and play it well. As to honor him, there are many things that the Trailblazers should and I have confidence will do, but having some kind of award for excellence in being a representative of this Franchise would be a pretty cool thing!! I think they should have the black "00" on the uniforms as well. A section in the Rose Garden to honor him (in name?!?) and in the future other players that have lived up to that level of professionalism. I think renaming the fountain out front "The Duck Pond" also would add fun to it!! Obviously the Team will do something to honor him.
In the end as a human you always wonder what kind of person people will remember you as and what kind of legacy you will leave behind. Duck has touched ALOT of people and has left behind something greater than just being a great basketball player, he left the legacy of being a great human.
Time to wipe the tears off the keyboard and go watch some old games of Duck grabbing a rebound, outletting to Clyde across the "Old Equator" who kicks it ahead to Porter, cross court to Kersey flying down the wing for a "Mercy Mercy JAM!!! .......Bingo, Bango, Bongo!!!
As I heard today by another fan, I am feeling RIP CITY returning! To be honest, it has never left. We have guys with Ducks heart and caring, RIP CITY is here and stronger than ever!!!-- John F
I'm so sad to hear this news. My heart goes out to his family and close friends. As a Portland native and life long Trailblazer fan, I feel like we all lost a teammate.-- Nancy P
Wow, what a devastating way to start the day. I was a season ticket holder back in the "Duck" days and Kevin was an incredible player and person. He never gave up, didn't complain and rose above so many obstacles. Just goes to show you the type of person he was... Someone who gave back to the community, especially to underprivileged kids, and one who remained incredibly humble even after his NBA career now that is someone to look up to!-- Debbie C

I first met Kevin when I was picking up our season tickets and he asked if he could see them, When I handed them to him he gave me his pen and said it looked like a good trade to him. About a half hour later he returned them to me and signed the back of the packet for me, what a guy. He was special and will be missed. Not gone went ahead of his fans to play on Gods team. God bless you Kevin and your family.-- Margaret R

I watched the Ducks entire career. He was a gentle giant who always gave his best effort. He was seven feet tall and yet had the softest touch. He was also a great person off the court and he will be sorely missed. We love you Duck. RIP big fella!!-- Elmar S
I worked in a convenience store in 1991 that many of the Blazers came into. They were all nice but I never really noticed them being out of the ordinary size-wise. That is, until Duckworth came in. I couldn't even see his face because it was above the "overhead" display. He was laughing and bantering with a couple teammates as I checked him through. Of course I didn't even begin to know him but he radiated "nice" and I was left with warm fuzzy feelings about him. He remained one of my favorite athletes all these years. I'm crying now. Miss your winning smile already Kevin-- Sam
I was almost a #1 of the big man back then. I am just devastated to hear him passing away. he was such a great guy on and off the court. He will be sorely missed.-- Jason P
It seems much too early at 44, but because I believe Kevin had accepted God's gift of grace through Jesus Christ, "to be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD". You will be missed in the here and now by those left behind.-- Bryan

Funny thing is I can't but he remembered me from that joke. He is part of the Gentlemen 5 that us Oregonians were blessed to have represent our Blazers. GOD bless his family and GOD bless him. Now Wilt has someone to play with in heaven. -- Jacob M.

As a lifelong Pistons fan I hated the 1990 Trailblazer team, Especially Kevin Duckworth, Yet I would have loved to have him in Detroit. As I look back now, While they never got a championship The 90s Blazer teams were something special. Duckworth definitely contributed to that. My condolences to his family. They don't make them like Kevin anymore. -- Glenn

I remember going to my first Blazer game at the Coliseum and after the game we went outside to where the cars were parked. My heart goes to his family. I’m sorry for your great loss. -- SD
Kevin was as nice as they come. I went to EIU with Kevin and one day I was behind him in line in the cafeteria. His senior year he was pushing 325 lbs. The cafeteria worker puts one chicken fried steak on his plate. He turns to me and says "she must be new" then he yells to the cafeteria manager nicknamed "Kegger" and says "Kegger is she new?" with that his plate was filled with 6 0r 7 chicken fried steaks. May God Bless you Kevin! -- Mike L.
The way to pay tribute to Kevin Duckworth is too retire the #00 and have it hang in the rafters of the Rose Quarter and a moment of silence on the first game of the season and his old teammates on the court all on the 1st game on home court....I and my husband are Blazer fans. -- Cyndee E.

You will be missed. -- John

Today when I found out that Kevin Duckworth died, it was sad for the fact that he was a Trailblazer for me. I wasn't around in his glory days and NBA Finals games, but I've heard a lot about him in this day alone and already have respect for him. He seemed like an all-around guy who was kind-hearted and very committed to a team like Portland. We'll miss you Duck, and we'll use you as an inspiration for our new promising year.. a la Greg Oden being our next great center. :) -- Jake L
Being from Seattle, the thought of a Trailblazer made me cringe. For some reason, "Duck" was one of those Blazers, along with Clyde and of course our beloved Nate, that I actually enjoyed watching play the game. You could tell he loved to be out on the court. Now I hear of all the things he did for the community. It sounds like we not only lost one of the gentlemen of the game but also a special person. God bless "00". -- Tim M

Duck, I never got to see you play live since I was too young in your heyday. But, I've heard the stories of how you were a class act on and off the court. I regularly attended Blazer games when Kevin (Duck) Duckworth was in his prime playing along other greats like
Kermit Washington, Clyde (Glide)Dexler and other great players. Kevin (Duck) was a great player on the court and a tremendous human being off the court. He was always willing to help the Trailblazer organization and the community. He will be sorely missed ! I moved up to Portland from Eugene during the summer of 1991 when I was a third grader. I immediately caught Rip City fever in fourth grade when my teacher introduced me to the NBA, the Blazers, and 'Bust a Bucket' among other things. Duckworth was always a favorite of mine and I vividly remember tooting those duck calls as a fourth grader, and the thunderous "quack" of the Coliseum. -- Peter B
Duck- All i can really say is that the blazermaniacs are deeply saddened today. I will always remember that big ole grin of yours when you were playing. You were a key part on a very special team and I will always remember you and the rest of that team. Heaven is a happier place today because you are in it. I hope you are tearing down the rim up there with one of your monster jams. RIP CITY will miss you. -- Gary G
I worked right along side the Duck trying to loss weight and keep in shape. I knew what a struggle it was and thought he could overcome that curse. But in the end, weight won, but it did not change the kindness of this gentle giant. He will be missed. -- Bob M
I remember games in the coliseum... When Duckworth would get the ball the ringing of duck calls would fill the arena, I was in 6th grade my 1st game, it was against the Spurs, Duck had a great game and I was hooked on Blazer basketball! We will miss you! -- David Lee
As a kid I asked for his autograph after a game, and he just said "Walk with me..." in that deep voice and I walked with him to his car while he signed my ball. He really did care about his fans and he was always appreciated in Portland.
He signed it "Big Duck" -- Curtis S

Retire the 00 jersey this season -- Chris J
Kevin Duckworth will be missed. He was my favorite Blazer in the late 80's and early 90's. When I played high school basket ball I wore 00 because he was my favorite. I met him once at a Texaco Station in Aloha, Or. He came into fill up the black Blazer that had the license plate that said DUCK. I recognized him right away. I was star struck. He was the nicest athlete I have ever met. Even in the few short minutes that I filled his tank, and washed his window. I will miss you "Duck -- Chad
Some of my fondest memories growing up involved watching Duck and the rest of the late 80's early 90's Blazers compete. We will never forget you or Game 7 against San Antonio. Rest in Peace Big Fella. -- Dave M
I never met him, but yet, I feel like I knew him. He was probably the most open and approachable Blazer I've seen. His smile was disarming and he was always smiling. He seemed like a great man, always giving back and giving his time to Portland, to Oregon. This loss is huge and I hope the memorial for Duck is even larger. -- Anna
Lived in Salem when won the championship, liked Portland ever since, Duckworth era was good, went to a Timberwolves game at Target Center vs. Portland, I remember Drexler played, I was for Portland and the Wolves fans did not like me, sad time now I saw it on MSN today Aug. 26, I liked Porter too --Reid J
One of my favorite on court memory of his is when we were in the play offs and Duck had injured his hand. We didn't know if he was going to play and really needed him. He came out of the locker room with a cast on his wrist/thumb and the fans went crazy cheering for him. He was trying to keep his game face on but I could tell he was touched. He was a sensitive guy and sometimes needed to be reminded how much us Blazer fans loved him.
I met him at the Chicken Bar in Beaverton years ago (early 90s). He was leaning on the counter ordering when I walked in and it took me a few seconds to realize is was Duck. I just thought, wow, that guy is really big! That team was so much a part of our community and so beloved by the fans you felt like you knew them. He turned and looked at me and I said, "Hi" (like I knew him). He smiled and leaned toward me and said, "How ya doing?" I was so star struck I forgot how to speak. A few weeks later I was walking by the Chicken Bar again. Duck was sitting at the window counter eating his lunch. I glanced over and he gave me a big grin and a wave. I swear he recognized me. He was amazingly approachable and friendly. He's contributed so much to the team, city, and fans both on the court and off. Truly a class act.
That late 80s/early 90s team was so beloved by us that I feel like I've lost a family member.
I like the idea of a "00 or "Duck" black band on the uniforms this season and, because Duck loved children, I'd like to see the Blazers name a section after him and give the tickets to underprivileged kids. I think he would've loved the idea. -- Julie
you gave all you had in the championship series with the Bulls and I wish you had of gotten more playing time. I will always respect and remember you. -- Marvaye C

A truly sad day for Blazer fans. Duck was always cordial and willing to shake a hand or sign an autograph. I think the '00' number should be retired....Rest in peace Duck -- Dave

Kevin was a good player, but more important, was a great person who continued to be a positive influence on a community that in many regards slighted him. To preface my comment, I am first and foremost a life-long, ardent Laker fan. I can only look back with complete admiration and respect for early 90's Blazer teams. "The Duck" was the "Big Man" for one of the most hard playing, "character"-driven teams in the modern era of the NBA. I am saddened by the loss of Kevin. He was one of the very few players I rooted for outside of my own team. I offer my sincerest wishes to family and friends of the Duckworth family. I think it's a testament to Kevin that he has been out of the limelight for well over a decade and his loss has brought forth such an outpouring. Thanks Kevin... you were great. --Eric

I can't think of a single moment that Kevin was anything but a gentleman. I have been a Blazer fan since they were established, and when he came along, he was the missing piece of the puzzle for that team. He was loved by all of his teammates and fans, and will surely be missed. That kind of man is rare anymore. -- Randy
I didn't know Kevin when he was playing. But a couple of years ago I had the honor and privilege to meet him on a hunting trip at a mutual friend's ranch. Over the next several days we talked and I got to know a very sensitive and loving person who didn't like to talk about himself or his accomplishments in the NBA. Since that trip our paths have crossed several times and he was always the same person that I came to cherish as a friend. His presence will be missed and I can only be thankful that I got to know him and he has been a part of my life. He not only taught me that a famous sports figure can be an ordinary person, but also how to make the best fried catfish I have ever had. -- Ray

So so sad... my sympathies are sent to family. Goodbye. -- Diane

I met Duck one year ago flying back from Puerto Villarta. He had taken his family on vacation. We spent over 30 minutes chatting while waiting for our baggage in Customs @ SFO. He was one heck of a nice guy.. I loved watching that team. And will never forget listening on the Radio as he came out to play in that Game 7 against San Antonio in '90 --
I am going to really miss Kevin he was a gentle giant :-) -- Paul B
Duck epitomized what we should all strive to be, a good person. If the young Blazers of today live up to the example Duck set they will be loved and admired as much as we loved Duck. One of the greats on and off the court, so many memories of how he treated people and how much he gave back to the area he loved. -- Sally H
Kevin Duckworth was our muscle. The intimidator. The man. I loved watching Kevin play his ass off. Outscoring rival centers with good footwork and a soft touch around the basket. Duckworth was so strong, nobody could move the Duck. Maybe players could dribble-drive around Kevin, but he did a good job moving his feet. Besides, he had the dudes named Buck, Jerome, Cliff, Terry and Clyde, that would help out Duckworth. I wish the brightest day for the Duckworth family. We were lucky to have Kevin as a center on the Blazers, and a local hero. We'll miss K-Duck. -- Greg J
