Celebrating Our Heritage: Kevin Duckworth page 4

continued Like his parents. Kevin is a down-to-earth kind of guy. There's a little bit of Chicago still left in him, but he's a true Oregonian now, living in the rural Aurora area.

He loves the outdoors, he loves his dogs, he loves to fish, as he often did with his father Edward back home, and he loves to tinker with cars, build furniture and generally work with his hands.

As a kid, he worked on carpentry projects, making some pocket money and building self-esteem by paneling his parents' home, building coffee tables, end tables and chairs. He also enjoyed constructing hand-held, remote-controlled, gas-powered racers -- things you can build with your hands from scratch and then take out in a field and experience the results of your creations.

Growing up in a small town, Kevin lived a well-rounded life, blending basketball with fishing, boating tinkering with toys, building furniture and dabbling in music (he played the tenor saxophone as a youngster with his musical tastes leaning toward jazz and rap).

In many ways, Duck's story is different than most professional basketball players who from an early age have dreams of making it to the NBA show.

His dreams mostly were about asking people to let him be Kevin Duckworth, a rather shy, average kind of guy masquerading in a giant's body.

He's no doubt the Blazers' all-time unsung and unappreciated hero -- a pivotal part of the great Portland teams of the early '90s. That's what this Duck was worth.
