Williams, who had been named to the NBA All-Defensive team earlier that week, said that he had noticed Chambers' tendency to swing the ball with both hands from side to side near the floor before driv
ing to the basket.
"He was raking the ball to clear himself. He'd been doing it all night, so I was waiting for it," Williams said. "I just went for the ball and knocked it away. When that happened no one was going to get the ball from me," Williams said.
Williams had dogged the high-scoring Chambers into a 5-for-16 shooting night, including a scoreless first half.
The Blazer post-game celebration, which began in the chaos of their Phoenix dressing room, scaled to a height of 35,000 feet on Blazer One in the flight back to Oregon. The team landed in Hillsboro where more than 10,000 Blazer fans gathered in the wee morning hours to cheer their heroes.
There were many memorable moments in Portland's ride to the Western Conference championship in 1990, but the most vivid one perhaps was when Terry Porter came out of nowhere during the Portland's chaotic lockerroom celebration and jumped on Buck Williams' back, shouting, "Giddyup, Buck."
Once he dismounted, Porter explained, "When Buck came here, he said he'd carry us into the NBA finals. I just wanted to see what a real ride on his back would be like."
