Breaking Down the Breaks of the Game

The recent passing of writer David Halberstam has brought about a wave of praise for his vast contributions to the literary world. Halberstam wrote a total of 74 books in his 73 years of life, but most notable to Trail Blazer fans and basketball fans in general was his first sports book, The Breaks of the Game – a yearlong journey with the 1979 Portland Trail Blazers. The book is being hailed as the greatest sports book of all-time.

Wayne Thompson was sports editor of The Oregonian newspaper in 1979 and spent a good deal of time with Halberstam during his research for the book, which was eventually published in 1981. The two became friends and remained so up until the time of Halberstam’s tragic death last week in car accident in Northern California. Blazers Evangelist Jim Taylor sat down with Thompson recently for a behind the scenes look at the Pulitzer Prize winning author and the making of The Breaks of the Game.
