Brandon Roy Named Western Conference All-Star

Roy will suit up in New Orleans for 57th NBA All-Star Game Feb. 17

Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy was named a 2008 NBA All-Star reserve by a vote of Western Conference head coaches, the NBA announced today.

The second-year pro and reigning NBA Rookie of the Year has helped guide the Trail Blazers to a 26-19 record, averaging 19.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 37.3 minutes in 45 games (all starts). He becomes the first Trail Blazer since Rasheed Wallace in 2001 to be named to the NBA All-Star team.

“It’s a dream come true,” Roy said. “I’m sure our success this season helped influence coaches to vote for me, so I’m grateful for the opportunity to celebrate this honor with my teammates, and to represent Portland.”

Roy, 23, is the 14th Trail Blazer selected to the All-Star Game and the third youngest. He has led the team in scoring 24 times, assists 27 times and counts 25 games of 20-plus points.

“We’re thrilled for Brandon,” General Manager Kevin Pritchard said. “It’s a great testament to his play and his leadership this season, and a compliment to our entire team.”

Roy will be the first sophomore to appear in the All-Star Game since LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in 2005. He is the only NBA All-Star also scheduled to play in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge on Friday, Feb. 15, where he will join teammate LaMarcus Aldridge on the sophomore squad.

The West’s starting five, decided by fan balloting, consists of Carmelo Anthony (Denver), Tim Duncan (San Antonio), Yao Ming (Houston), Kobe Bryant (L.A. Lakers) and Allen Iverson (Denver). Rounding out the squad from the head coaches’ vote are Carlos Boozer (Utah), Steve Nash (Phoenix), Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas), Chris Paul (New Orleans), Amare Stoudemire (Phoenix) and David West (New Orleans).

The 2008 NBA All-Star Game tips off at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific) on Sunday, Feb. 17, from New Orleans Arena. The event will be televised live on TNT and broadcast in over 200 countries.
