Abdur-Rahim and Davis Named Good Guys

July 1, 2004

The Sporting News today announced the winners of the 2004 "Good Guys" Awards, which are presented to pro athletes from the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and NASCAR. Two Trail Blazers were honored on the list.

The Good Guy selection for the top Good Guy in the NBA was given to Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Also making the list of NBA Good Guys was Center Dale Davis.

Nominated by their individual teams and leagues and chosen by the staff of the Sporting News, the "Good Guy" Awards honor those who open their hearts as well as their wallets to serve the needy and unfortunate as well as improve their communities through their compassion and generosity.

"This is a very important initiative for us," John Rawlings, Editorial Director of Sporting News, said. "Senior Writer Paul Attner, who conceived the idea and handles virtually every detail in the selection process, combed over hundreds of nominees for the Good Guy award and the accompanying list. It’s an opportunity for fans to see a side of athletes that seldom is revealed."

Both Abdur-Rahim and Davis spend a great deal of time and money to assist the communities in their home town and in Portland. The two also work toward causes such as literacy, health-related studies and other public assistance programs.
