Kia Presents the Make It Better Summer Tour
|
In 1970, Harry Glickman sent Bill Schonely on the road with the following marching orders – ‘Put a radio network together!’ The Schonz put on his sales hat and recruited 13 affiliates that year and the Trail Blazers Broadcast Network was born. Now at 20 stations, including new Portland flagship, “The Game,” the Network also includes Comcast Sports Net NW and network television affiliates in Portland, Medford and Eugene. In homage to Schonely, the Trail Blazers will renew a summer tradition by visiting each out of market affiliate throughout Oregon and Southwestern Washington. The Trail Blazers “Make It Better” Statewide Summer Tour, presented by Kia Motors, will visit communities throughout Oregon & Washington to host free kids’ basketball clinics and visit with fans, broadcast affiliates and corporate partners. Also supported by Nike, the tour will feature visits from Trail Blazers broadcasters Mike Barrett, Mike Rice and Antonio Harvey as well as senior executives, Trail Blazers alumni and Blaze the Trail Cat. The Trail Blazers and Kia will partner with local service organizations at each locale to provide free basketball clinics during the tour. The Statewide Summer Tour is part of the Trail Blazers continued commitment to “Make It Better.” Under the “Make It Better” umbrella, Trail Blazers community outreach programs touched more than 110,582 people in Oregon and SW Washington during the 2008-09 season. ![]() 7/13 - Medford We got lucky! By that, I mean it’s only about 78 degrees in the normally scorching metropolis of Medford, where we tipped off the second annual Kia Presents: Trail Blazers Make It Better Statewide Summer Tour. A contingent of eight Trail Blazers employees arrived last night, fittingly dining at a restaurant named Porters, which we don’t think was named after the Trail Blazers great. continue reading | ![]() 7/14 - Klamath Falls Two skills camps in Medford on Monday left our coaches a bit weary and bleary on Monday afternoon, which might explain how one of our Kias ended up in Ashland en route to Klamath Falls. Or, perhaps we were misled by a GPS with a twisted sense of humor. At any rate, we were in a comfortable ride, and the scenic detours are another reminder of how beautiful our state is. The Trail Blazers take pride in being “Oregon’s Team,” and it’s not lip service. The opportunity to visit Trail Blazers fans outside of the Portland area is one major reason this tour was conceived. It’s as fun for us as it is for the fans we encounter along the way. continue reading |
![]() 7/16 - Eugene On the final day of leg one of the Statewide Summer Tour, the Kias brought us to Eugene, which meant our 8-person traveling contingent had not one, but two celebrities. Adrian Stelly, our Basketball Outreach Coordinator, is a former Duck (2003-07), who spent time catching up with some old college friends on Wednesday night while the rest of us watched Summer League action from Las Vegas. Later in the evening, several fans sidled up upon our intense inter-office game of shuffleboard to meet Jerome and say thank you for his contributions to the Trail Blazers.continue reading |
