RIP CITY ISSUE #6 ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE: FUNK PLASTIC SPONSORED BY MILLER PAINT
Todd Irving takes his bucket drumming very seriously. He waxes poetic about the tonality he and his son Tristan can coax from 5-gallon paint buckets. This season – in addition to teaching “Bucket Science 101” on the Concourse pre-game – the Funk Plastic duo have taken their high energy sounds to the court for a bunch of Trail Blazers games.
Irving credits Mel Brown, Ron Steen and Bruce Carter as heavy influences. “They are all great drummers,” he notes, “but my inspiration as a musician came from Danny Wilson” – former Jeff Lorber Fusion bassist.
Irving’s been a Trail Blazers fan “…since they beat the 76ers for the NBA title”. Prior to that time his favorite players were on the 76ers and “I had the last name of Irving, so I thought I was little Julius!” Right about now, Todd is squeezing some fresh sounds out of some plastic buckets!
