Players, coaches and staff hold a holiday party at the Rose Quarter to donate more than 800 trees to those in need this holiday season

Blazers Community Builders Holiday Express Takes off with Christmas Tree Giveaway

PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 5, 2000 -- The Blazers Community Builders Holiday Express kicks off a season full of giving on Tuesday, December 5 with a tree giveaway and holiday party on the Rose Quarter commons. Blazers players, coaches, front office staff, Blazer Dancers and broadcasters will give more than 800 trees to families in need this holiday season. IHOP is also providing a pancake breakfast for guests from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

The public is encouraged to join in on the festivities and bring canned food to benefit the Salvation Army. The first 100 people to donate 10 pounds of food or more will get a free Christmas tree.

The Blazers partner with agencies such as Albina Head Start, Urban League of Portland and Police Activities League to give free Christmas trees to families in need during the holiday season.

Visions Unlimited Tree Farm in Albany, Oregon has donated over 800 Christmas trees to the Blazers Community Builders Holiday Express this year, making it possible to donate a large volume of trees to low-income families in the Portland area.

"We're excited to partner with Visions Unlimited trees again," said Blazers President Bob Whitsitt. "Their continued generosity will have a terrific impact on families in the community. This is a wonderful project and a unique way to bring the Christmas spirit to our neighbors in the Northeast Portland community."

All of the Blazers Community Builders teams will participate in three different aspects of the project, including a distribution of trees to charity organizations, a tree lot and holiday party on the Rose Quarter commons and food collection for the Salvation Army.

Head Coach Mike Dunleavy and players will lead the Holiday Express charge with the distribution to charity youth organizations in the North/Northeast community. The Blazers will make a stop at four Albina Head Start Centers. In the afternoon, General Motors employees have donated the time and trucks to deliver trees to of non-profits all around Portland.

Over 19 community organizations, including William Temple House and the Urban League of Portland, distributed vouches to clientele for a free tree. The tree lot will be constructed on the Rose Quarter commons and will operate from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., allowing families in need to stop by and get a tree with their voucher. The lot will feature local choirs, hot drinks, cookies from Nestle and other entertainment during the day.

Along with the tree distribution to those in need, the Blazers are also asking the public to bring 10 pounds of food to receive a free tree. The food will benefit the Salvation Army's food baskets for the holiday. The first 100 people that make it to the commons with the food receive a free tree.

In addition, earlier this month Rasheed Wallace and his family collected ornaments to give to the families who receive a tree at the Holiday Express. Wallace and his family will hand out ornaments to families at the Rose Quarter Commons while they last.
