Kersey Helps Inaugurate SMART Book Award Winner
May 5, 2004
More than 9,000 children throughout Oregon have carefully reviewed the candidates and cast their votes, and made their choice known today.
After reading hundreds of pages and thousands of words this school year, Oregon SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) students statewide cast their votes for their favorite book of the year from a slate of strong candidates.
William Joyce author of the book George Shrinks is this year's winner of the 2004 SMART Book Award. He was announced and inaugurated at a ceremony at King Elementary.
As part of this special assembly, a crowd of 80 local first through third graders joined former Portland Trail Blazers star Jerome Kersey, who, along with officials from the SMART program, announced the winner of the 2004 SMART Book Award.
Kersey read the winning book out loud, engaged the children in a discussion about what they like most about the story and found out why they think children throughout Oregon selected it as their favorite book of the year.
