Heart of the Community Awards

On February 11th, the Trail Blazers and Hands on Portland hosted and announced the third annual Heart of the Community Awards to honor exemplary volunteers who have demonstrated selfless compassion and a pledge to volunteerism throughout the past year.
The event was emceed by KGW anchor Laural Porter. Local dignitaries presented the awards, they included Trail Blazers Director of Player Programs and former player Jerome Kersey, former winners David & Xuan Sibell, Oregon State Senator Margaret Carter, President of the Board of Directors of Hands on Portland Jeff Cogen, and Trail Blazers President Steve Patterson.
Award winners were selected in five categories out of nearly one hundred nominees, including outstanding youth, outstanding community volunteer outstanding senior, outstanding nonprofit volunteer manager and outstanding corporate volunteer program.
All proceeds from sponsorships and table sales go toward Hands on Portland, Portland’s volunteer center committed to matching volunteers of all ages with nonprofit organizations throughout communities in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The judging panel consists of 10 individuals representing local corporations, nonprofits, retired and individual volunteers. Sponsors include: Corporate Volunteer Council of the Greater Portland Area, PGE, Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon, and Standard Insurance Company.
