Blazers Tip Off Reading Month

March 3, 2003

As part of the NBA’s Read to Achieve initiative and Read Across America Day, the Blazers hosted nearly 200 pre-school children to lunch.

The Blazers hosted students from Albina Head Start to the reading lunch where the children received books, a backpack and had the opportunity to read a book with a Blazers player and other local celebrities.

The Blazers tipped off a month of reading activities as part of the NBA’s focus on literacy through the Read to Achieve program. As part of the month's festivities, players will:

  • Visit a local elementary school to thank them for their support
  • Host a SMART reading night at the Blazers vs. Raptors game
  • Hold a “Reading Time-Out” with youth at a local immigrant center
  • Host events at Blazers Reading and Learning Centers
  • Donate books throughout the Portland metro area

In addition, the Blazers donated $15,000 to SMART, Start Making a Reader Today, as a continuing commitment to literacy.

In 2003, Read Across America Day will be celebrated on March 3 because Theodor Giesel’s birthday (Dr. Seuss), March 2, falls on a Sunday.
