2020 Playoffs: West Play-In | Trail Blazers vs. Grizzlies

Jusuf Nurkic says his grandmother has died from COVID-19

Jusuf Nurkic played with a heavy heart during Saturday’s matchup against Memphis.

The Portland Trail Blazers center announced on Instagram that his grandmother has died of the coronavirus.

He managed to put together an astounding performance, logging 22 points, 21 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks in Portland’s 126-122 victory. They advance out of the Western Conference Play-In to challenge the Lakers in the First Round on Tuesday.

After the Blazers’ first seeding game in July, Nurkic delivered news that his 67-year-old grandmother Hana had recently fallen into a coma after contracting COVID-19 in their native Bosnia.

“I think people don’t realize the (pandemic) is real out there,” he said at the time. “We’ve been fortunate to be here in a safe environment, we’re tested every day, but please take care of yourself, wear a damn mask if you need to wear it.”
