The Boston Celtics survived a late charge in the final seconds and defeated the Miami Heat, 74-72, in a Las Vegas Summer League second-round playoff game at Thomas and Mack Center on Saturday.

The Heat took to a seven-point lead in the first quarter but the Celtics quickly closed the gap and led by as much as five points in the first half. Boston continued to extend their lead throughout the second half, but then Miami commenced on a tear that cut the Celtics’ lead to two points in the closing seconds with a fade-away jumper by Rashad Vaughn. The Celtics managed to run out the clock for the win. While the Celtics only shot 19 percent from long range, they managed to hold onto the ball with only nine turnovers, while the Heat coughed up the ball 14 times.

Pierria Henry started at shooting guard and led all Celtics scorers with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Guerschon Yabusele also continued to impress in Summer League play with a 12-point, 10 rebound double-double. Boston proved to have considerable bench depth, as the team saw contribution from 10 of 13 players on the Summer League roster on Saturday.

Derrick Walton Jr. scored a team-high 15 points for the Heat. With Bam Adebayo (rest) and Derrick Jones (ankle) on the bench, players like Clemson grad Landry Nnoko (five points, six rebounds) and former Milwaukee first-round pick Rashad Vaughn (10 points, five rebounds) drew starts for Miami on Saturday.

The Celtics will move on to face Portland in the Summer League quarterfinals. Miami finished in Las Vegas with a record of 2-3.
