LAS VEGAS — The Miami Heat defeated the New Orleans Pelicans, 110-106, in the first round of the Las Vegas Summer League playoffs at Cox Pavilion on Thursday.

Miami became the fourth team to upend a higher-seeded team in the first round. Although the Pelicans cut Miami’s lead to two points in the closing minutes, Derrick Walton Jr. knocked down a clutch three-pointer to put the game out of reach.

After spending the past six years overseas, Jarrod Jones has made a splash in his return to NBA action with the Heat. He followed up a double-double on Saturday with a 31-point performance against the Pelicans. In addition to his game-sealing three, Walton Jr. also pitched in with a 15-point, 11-assist double-double.

Cheick Diallo continued his impressive summer campaign and led the Pelicans in scoring with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Walter Lemon Jr., a G-League standout for the Pels, also showed up with another hefty stat line, tallying 18 points, six assists and five rebounds. He’s now collected 26 assists over four games in Las Vegas.

Miami will now advance to the second round of the summer league playoffs to face the Boston Celtics. The Pelicans will play their next game in the consolation bracket.
