QUOTE OF THE NIGHT
"This is a hell of a win. We've got a long trip ahead of us, and we need to get some momentum from this."
-- Jerry Stackhouse, who was one of three Mavs with 12 points in a 92-88 road win over the Chauncey Billups-less Pistons that started a season-long six-game road odyssey on the right foot. Dallas plays 11 of its remaining 17 games away from home.

NBA.COM'S FANTASY TAKE
With Zach Randolph having his best year and LaMarcus Aldridge recently stepping up his game, the only All-Star on the roster has become a forgotten man. Jamaal Magloire, a 2004 All-Star, posted 11 points and 12 rebounds for just his second double-double of the season, but Portland fell to the visiting Sonics anyway.

WHAT A WEEKEND!
Kobe Bryant has never seen much need for college ball. In his 11th year out of high school, he overshadowed the amateurs' big weekend with two stellar performances. Bryant followed up his 65-point Friday with 50 more in Sunday's 109-102 win over the visiting Timberwolves. It was the first time that Kobe has reached 50 in consecutive games, making him the first Laker to accomplish the feat since Elgin Baylor in 1962. These 115 combined points rank behind the 118 Bryant posted on Jan. 18-20, 2006, and Wilt Chamberlain owns the top 12 two-game totals in NBA history. Kobe goes for three Thursday in Memphis.

  • ROCKETS LEAVE SIXERS IN THE DUST
How bad were the 76ers on Sunday? Look at it this way: If you took Kobe Bryant off of the Lakers' roster and put his 50 points onto the Philly side of the box score, they would have only tied the visiting Rockets. Yao Ming scored a game-high 24 points, but that was only part of the story in the Rockets' 124-74 trouncing of the host 76ers. Houston outscored Philadelphia in every quarter, outshot the Sixers by nearly 20 percent (.533 to .338), outrebounded Philly 54-36, outassisted the 76ers 29-10 and had 10 steals. The 50-point margin of victory is the largest by any team this season and, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, is just the third 50-plus-point margin for a road team in NBA history.
    ROOKIE WATCH
With two of the NBA's best rookies - Andrea Bargnani and Jorge Garbajosa - in New York for a visit, Renaldo Balkman distinguished himself from the pack. The 20th overall pick hit all seven of his field-goal attempts, scored 13 of his 15 points after halftime, added 12 rebounds, three steals and two blocks, and took part in a late 27-5 run that led to the Knicks' convincing 92-74 win over the Atlantic Division leaders.
    SIXTH MAN OF THE NIGHT
As two of the best big men of the past and future squared off, one of the biggest draft busts in recent memory made an impact. Shaquille O'Neal scored 20 for Miami and Dwight Howard had 17 with 11 rebounds, but it was Darko Milicic's 12 points, 10 boards and two blocks in 26 bench minutes that was unexpected and critical to Orlando's 97-83 triumph in South Florida that snapped Miami's nine-game winning streak.
    D-LEAGUE STARS OF THE NIGHT
Curtis Stinson and Jeremy Richardson scored 24 points apiece and Stinson added six rebounds and 10 assists in the Fort Worth Flyers' 96-93 road victory over the Los Angeles D-Fenders on Sunday. With the win, the Flyers remain just one half-game back of the Eastern Division-leading Dakota Wizards at 23-14 on the year.
