HOUSTON, Feb. 10, 2006 – The National Basketball Association and Nike will dedicate a new NikeGO basketball court on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club in Houston, Tx. as part of the NBA Cares All-Star Community Caravan. The Boys and Girls Club was used most recently as a disaster relief shelter for hurricane victims, which resulted in the reduction of the Club’s normal program of activities and damage to the gym floor.

“We are proud to be part of the enhancement of the Boys and Girls Club and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to impact the lives of young people here in Houston during NBA All-Star,” said Nadine Glinski, Director NBA Community and Player Programs. “We thank Nike for their continued support of the All-Star court refurbishment program and the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA.”

Following the court dedication, members of the NBA Family will lead a Jr. NBA/Jr.WNBA Fitness clinic for more than 50 youngsters on the new court at the Boys and Girls Club, which is a proud member of international Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA program. The clinic will stress health and fitness and join the players in a discussion on “Pledge to be a S.T.A.R.” (Sportsmanship, Teamwork, positive Attitude, Respect), in support of the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA’s sportsmanship initiative.

“We are pleased to partner with the NBA in this valuable community outreach activity,” said Nike's Phil Cook. “The court project provides opportunities for athletes to practice and play this wonderful game, and creates a structural legacy of the all-star weekend events in the city of Houston.”

During NBA All-Star 2006, the NBA Cares Community Caravan will feature a full schedule of events beginning on Feb. 13, 2006, including Reading Rallies, fitness clinics, hospital visits, the unveiling of one of the first 100 Learn & Play Centers and a newly refurbished basketball court. Additionally, the NBA, NBPA and Turner Sports will team up with Habitat for Humanity and build two homes for families in need. One of those homes will go to a family in Houston and the other will be delivered to the Gulf Coast Region.

The Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA program of NBA Cares helps develop a life-long passion for the game of basketball by providing a support structure that encourages participation and makes the game fun and rewarding for the over 2 million players, coaches, officials and parents involved in the program globally. Entering its fifth season, the league emphasizes fundamental skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship and positive adult participation in a fun and rewarding youth basketball experience where young players can create a bond with the game while learning what it takes to be successful away from the court, all at no cost to participate.

The Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA provides instructional materials to players, parents, coaches and officials created by a distinguished group of experts, including nationally-recognized youth sports expert Rick Wolff, the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO), nutritionist, Dr. Jackie Berning, and the Jr. NBA/ Jr. WNBA Advisory Council comprised of Ray Allen (Seattle Supersonics), Mike Bibby (Sacramento Kings), Sue Bird (Seattle Storm), Danny Crawford (NBA Official), Lisa Mattingly (WNBA Official), Suzie McConnell Serio (head coach of the Minnesota Lynx), Doc Rivers (head coach of the Boston Celtics), Tina Thompson (Houston Comets) and Bill Walton (Hall-of-Famer and ABC/ESPN analyst).
