This event is a celebration of reading and a highlight of the NBA's Read to Achieve program, the centerpiece of the league’s community relations efforts. Launched in May 2001, Read to Achieve is a year-round, league-wide initiative supported by all NBA, WNBA and National Basketball Development League (NBDL) teams that promotes the value of reading and on-line literacy and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children.
"The NBA's Read to Achieve program promotes the value of reading and stresses to young people how critical reading is to future success," said Rashad. "But this exciting hour of entertainment with today's hottest celebrities and NBA and WNBA stars, will also show kids that reading is fun. The Read to Achieve Celebration serves as a great avenue to deliver both messages."
Thousands of students from the greater Atlanta area will attend the Celebration as a reward for their participation in local reading programs. The students and television audiences will be entertained by some of today’s top music acts, NBA and WNBA players, and television and movie stars.
The NBA All-Star Read to Achieve Celebration is part of NBA All-Star 2003, which is hosted by the Atlanta Hawks and takes place in Atlanta from February 7-9. NBA All-Star 2003 includes NBA All-Star Saturday Night on Feb. 8 and the 52nd Annual NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 9.
