MVP: Magic Johnson, Los Angeles Lakers
With the hot Miami weather serving as a fitting backdrop, the Eastern Conference All-Stars combined torrid shooting with staunch defense to beat the West, 130-113, in the 40th annual NBA All-Star Game, held on February 11 before 14,810 fans at the Miami Arena.
Seven players scored in double figures, led by Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan with 17 apiece, as the East shot .543 from the field-including a sizzling 7-of-10 from three-point range-to give Detroit Coach Chuck Daly a victory in his first All-Star Game.
Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers, who had won virtually every other major award in his career, collected 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists for the West and received his first NBA All-Star Game MVP trophy in his ninth appearance at the event. Johnson became only the third player to win All-Star MVP honors while playing for the losing team.
