Los Angeles Lakers guard Jerry West thrilled hometown fans at the Los Angeles Forum with a last-second 20-foot jump shot on the run to give the West an exciting 112-110 victory over the East. West's heroics in the clutch won him the MVP Award, and he tied for his team's lead in scoring with 13 points.

Boston's Dave Cowens was outstanding for the East. He outplayed giants Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain under the boards and, with 11 seconds remaining, scored a jump shot to climax a rally that tied the game, 110-110. Cowens wound up with 14 points, 1 fewer than Celtics teammate John Havlicek.
