MVP: Willis Reed, New York
New York's Willis Reed and Cincinnati's Oscar Robertson collaborated to bring the East a 142-135 triumph in the 20th All-Star Game at Philadelphia's Spectrum. The barrel-chested Knickerbockers center had 21 points and 11 rebounds to earn MVP honors. The redoubtable Royal, in his 10th All-Star Game, also scored 21 points to break Bob Pettit's All-Star Game career scoring record of 224 by 6 points.
The biggest contributors for the West were San Diego's Elvin Hayes, with a game-high 24 points, and Los Angeles's Jerry West, who poured in 22. Trailing 106-85 after three quarters, the West exploded for an All-Star Game-record 50 points in the fourth quarter, but its comeback fell short.
