The "Never Nervous" Pervis Ellison Award
... given to the player under 30 with the best nickname

Nominee No. 1: Vince "Half-Man, Half-Amazing" Carter
Nickname doesn't roll off the tongue like some others, but adequately describes what he does nightly on the court. Long name is fitting of someone who possesses a game like no other.

Nominee No. 2: Steve "Stevie Franchise" Francis
Works on so many levels. With 2002 All-Star spot, has truly established himself as Houston's franchise player. Bonus points for sounding so much like his given name.

Nominee No. 3: Fred "the Mayor" Hoiberg
Some might say he doesn't belong with four All-Stars occupying other slots, but nickname is one for the ages. As sophomore in college, received three write-in votes in Ames, Iowa 1993 mayoral election, so was dubbed "the Mayor" and hasn't looked back since.

Nominee No. 4: Allen "the Answer" Iverson
Some prefer "Ivy" and some prefer "A.I.", but best known as simply "the Answer." Early in career, seen as more of a question mark, but now name couldn't be more accurate. Nickname will age well as Iverson keeps winning.

Nominee No. 5: Shaquille "the Big Aristotle" O'Neal
Just funny to imagine a 300-pound Greek philosopher boxing out seven-footers while wearing flowing white robes. Name speaks to O'Neal's sense of humor, but also to fact that Shaq is highly quotable.

ABOUT "NEVER NERVOUS" PERVIS ELLISON:
While Ellison did play past his 30th birthday, he was best known for his play early on in his career. Acquired nickname while in college, as he hit many a clutch shot for Louisville Cardinals. Unfortunately, injuries kept him from living up to his true potential in NBA, but unique nickname endures to this day.
