The place was jumpin' and the music was pumpin' as the fans who filled the Reebok Club NBA room at Jam Session Presented by Fleer clearly got their groove on to the sweet sounds of today's hottest musical acts. Located near the Jam Session entrance on the second level of the Philadelphia Convention Center, throngs of music lovers followed the huge Club NBA banner and soon found themselves immersed into a hot nightspot setting. Sounds of bouncing basketballs from inside the Convention Center were now engulfed by hard, pulsating rhythmic beats. Flashing, colored spotlights darting about the walls and ceiling combined with velvet ropes hugging the red carpet, greeted fans who eagerly filed into the room.
"This is so cool," said 16-year-old Jasmine Greer of North Philly upon her entrance to the room. "The red carpet makes you feel special."
Thursday night's show, which was themed College Night, was certainly tight as homegrown Philly rapper Ms. Jade hit the stage at 5:45 and set the tone. Groups VP215 and Floetry followed her before local fan favorite, City High, rocked the mike with a set that included "You Don't Know Me" and "Caramel."
"They were the bomb," screamed 13-year-old Tiara Blackwell after the performance. "They were off the hook!"
For City High, appearing at the Reebok Club NBA in front of their hometown fans was a special experience.
"This feels good," said Ryan Toby one of three members of the group along with Robby Pardello and Claudette Ortiz. "We're from right over the [Walt Whitman] Bridge. "Even though we're from Jersey, we've got the Philly flavor. We're like distant cousins."
City High will also perform the National Anthem on All-Star Saturday Night and is among other celebrated Philly artists such as Darryl Hall and John Oates, Boyz II Men, Musiq and McFadden & Whitehead who will all be showcasing the Philly sound that evening. Two-time Grammy winner and hometown favorite Patti LaBelle will be singing the National Anthem before Sunday's All-Star Game.
"We're honored to be part of such a rich history and it's going to be a special Saturday night" said Toby. "It's a legacy of great musical talent. So much great music has come from this area -- Gambling Huff, Boyz II Men, Teddy Pendergrass -- and we're so happy to be part of this recent movement with Music Soul Child, Jill Scott and The Roots. We're overjoyed to be a part of that."
Other acts keeping the Reebok Club NBA jumping included rapper Fat Joe, who performed several songs including, "What's Love" and was clearly enjoying the love he was experiencing from his fans.
"This is a beautiful thing," said Fat Joe of the Reebok Club NBA concept. "It keeps the kids off the street and it gives them a chance to see some of their favorite artists. We need more stuff like this."
Naughty by Nature, the East Orange, N.J. rap group who scored such hits as "O.P.P." and "Hip Hop Hooray" closed the show with a rousing, nine-song performance that included a new single, "Feels Good," that will be released in late April.
The Reebok Club NBA lineup is equally as hot throughout the weekend. On Friday, Amazin, Warren G, Mr. Cheeks and Honey Tongue are performing while Saturday's show features a full slate of artists beginning at 10:15 a.m. Lil' Bow Wow, rap's little big man whose debut album, "Beware of Dog" went triple-platinum, will be performing late morning. Other artists scheduled to showcase their talents include Lil J, Code 5, Corey, B2K, Royce Da 59, Ludacris, Fundisha, No Secrets, Trace, QTMC, Fabolous, Jahiem, Darcie Miller, Dakota Moon and rock band Tantric. McLyte and Naughty By Nature featuring 3LW will close out Sunday's Reebok Club NBA performances.
"Reebok Club NBA provides basketball fans and non basketball fans an opportunity to listen to the hottest musical artists at no extra charge," said Charles Rosenzweig, Vice President, NBA Entertainment and Player Marketing. "From rhythm and blues, rap, hip-hop and rock, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Music and basketball have always been entwined and Reebok Club NBA serves as the perfect complement to all of the interactive basketball activities inside Jam Session."
