Australian guard Exum declares for draft

What had been widely expected became official when Dante Exum, the Australian combo guard projected for the top of the lottery, declared for the 2014 draft rather than spend a season in the United States in college.

ESPN.com reported Exum -- the son of Cecil Exum, a member of North Carolina's 1982 national-championship team that included Michael Jordan and James Worthy -- hired prominent agent Rob Pelinka. It came after months of speculation that included Dante Exum saying he was considering NCAA options, putting Indiana at the top of his list, but almost everyone with the NBA believing since the start of the season that he would enter the draft.

Exum, who turns 19 in July to be eligible under NBA guidelines for international players, is No. 6 in the latest NBA.com top-30 rankings. At 6 feet 6 and 190 pounds, he has the size, ball-handling ability and elite athleticism to play either guard spot, but an inconsistent shot at this stage leads many front offices to believe he will be best suited at the point with a body most often compared to Shaun Livingston.

Exum starred for Australia in the world Under-19 tournament last summer. He returned home and finished his high school career, the last step before workouts for NBA scouts and executives.
