NEW YORK -- NBA TV's The Association: Brooklyn Nets debuts on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 10 p.m. ET, as the series introduces viewers to the Nets and its new home, with personal insights from Brooklyn natives such as actress Rosie Perez and hip hop artist Fabolous, as well as former Dodgers Ralph Branca and Joe Pignatano.
In Episode 1: Hello Brooklyn, viewers learn what Brooklyn and its residents are all about -- from its historic roots to the multicultural present. The series begins by introducing viewers to an NBA franchise in search of a new identity and the legendary borough that also has been looking to re-define its own identity in the shadow of glitzy Manhattan.
For decades, the spirit of Brooklyn was captured by its famous sports team, a group of lovable upstarts, the Dodgers. But in 1957, Brooklyn saw the Dodgers abruptly leave town, and a borough so closely identified with its major league sports team was set adrift for more than a half century. Now, the Nets seem a perfect fit for Brooklyn and the borough once again has a team to call its own.
NBA TV cameras take viewers behind the scenes with perennial All-Stars Deron Williams and Joe Johnson, the prominent faces of the new team; Head Coach Avery Johnson, one of the most compelling underdog stories in the NBA's recent past; and General Manager Billy King, the man who's made it his mission to rebuild the team in time for its Brooklyn debut.
Excerpts from the first episode include:
Nets GM Billy King, recalling a conversation with Deron Williams:
"One thing Deron did say to me, he said, 'Please, just don't wait on Dwight. We can't wait and not have a team.' The team of Brooklyn is bigger than one person. I owed it to the organization, I owed it to our fans, I owed it to Deron and the players that we have to build for Brooklyn and we went forward and built our team."
Head Coach Avery Johnson, on dealing with the pressure of coaching a new team, in its new Brooklyn home:
"The pressure has always been there. It's no different. I actually like this pressure better. I want to be in a situation where we're in the playoffs and everything is scrutinized. Every possession. Every quarter. Every interview. I don't want to be at home watching other teams and coaches under that sort of 'pressure'."
Rosie Perez, who welcomed Joe Johnson to Brooklyn by showing him around the borough:
"I just loved how people were so real with him. Even myself. I said, 'My goodness, you talk slow as hell.' He said, 'Yeah, you just say whatever comes to your mind.' And I go, 'Welcome to Brooklyn...get used to it!'"
