Sixers sign rookie free-agent guard Wayns

Posted Jul 31 2012 4:05PM

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The 76ers signed rookie free-agent guard Maalik Wayns on Tuesday.

Wayns averaged 17.6 points, 4.6 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game during his junior season at Villanova. He also ranked seventh in the nation in free-throw shooting (89.2 percent).

A member of the Magic in the 2012 Orlando Pro Summer League, Wayns appeared in three games, averaging 11.7 points, 5.7 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 2.33 steals.

A native of Philadelphia, Wayns was not drafted in June after a season with the Wildcats in which he was named second-team, All-Big East. He was among few bright spots for Villanova last season, as the team struggled to a 13-19 finish, with a 5-13 mark in the conference.

The 76ers went 35-31 last season and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. They defeated Chicago in the first round in six games before falling to Boston in seven games in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
