NBA Facebook page surpasses two million fans

NEW YORK -- The National Basketball Association (NBA) today announced that the official NBA page on Facebook (www.facebook.com/nba) has surpassed two million fans, an unprecedented number for a sports league on the social networking site. Overall, the official NBA page, all 30 NBA team pages, and NBA player pages have accumulated more than 16.5 million fans across Facebook.

The NBA page on Facebook has received more than one million new fans since July 2009, when it became the first sports league to eclipse the one million fan mark. During the 2009-10 NBA season, the page has generated nearly 500 million status update impressions and more than six million video views.

As a way of thanking fans for surpassing the two million mark, the NBA Facebook page will launch a special social media campaign featuring a series of personalized video messages from NBA stars Shaquille O'Neal, Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, Rudy Gay, and others throughout the week.

The NBA will also celebrate the two million fan milestone by recognizing a fan with a special gift package, which will include tickets to an upcoming NBA game, an autographed jersey from an NBA star, and a gift certificate to NBAStore.com. Additionally, today the league will provide all NBA Facebook fans with a promotional code offering a 24-hour discount to NBAStore.com and will highlight fan reaction to the milestone by reposting their comments.

The NBA continues to utilize social media to enhance the game experience for fans. Currently, the NBA is the No. 1 sports league on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, with the most fans, followers, and videos viewed on each, respectively. In 2009, the NBA ranked as the fifth most social brand according to Vitrue's annual Top 100 Social Brands List, ranking alongside iPhone, Disney, CNN, and MTV.

The official NBA Twitter account (www.twitter.com/nba) has accumulated more than 1.8 million followers since launching in February 2009. The account is the top-rated brand on Twitter based on followers, according to trackingtwitter.com. The NBA Channel on YouTube (www.youtube.com/nba) currently ranks as one of the most popular channels of all time and as the site's most popular sports channel, with more than 390 million videos viewed since its debut in February 2007.
