Summary
Last year's struggles and early playoff flameout were pinned largely on former coach Avery Johnson. Carlisle hasn't done a better job with essentially the same cast. (Team insiders insist this team is more talented.) The Mavs have yet to establish an identity. They've suffered a number of embarrassing blowouts and have struggled with lesser-quality competition.
Whispers of frustration from the locker room have grown louder in recent weeks. The feeling-out process from the players and coaches has lasted through midseason. A sense of urgency has been lacking, and it often shows up in slow starts to games. That could be seen as a problem with motivation.
Still, Nowitzki and Terry are having impressive seasons. Kidd impacts the game. Howard remains a mystery. When he's on, the Mavs are really good. The trade deadline is coming with great interest in Big D. Just reaching the playoffs for a franchise in the 2006 Finals may be considered an accomplishment. -- Art Garcia
