Jamison won't need surgery, but may miss season opener

The Washington Wizards are cautiously optimistic that forward Antawn Jamison will not need surgery to repair a shoulder injury suffered in Wednesday's preseason victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jamison suffered a subluxation -- a temporary shoulder separation -- when his shoulder momentarily popped out of joint when he reached in to foul Cavs center Zydrunas Ilgauskas in the first quarter of Washington's 109-104 victory.

An MRI taken Thursday revealed the subluxation, but his status for the regular season opener Nov. 3 against Cleveland is still up in the air. He will not play in any of the Wizards' final three preseason games.

Jamison's shoulder popped back into the joint immediately after the contact with Ilgauskas, but the Wizards won't know the complete damage done until the swelling in his shoulder goes down. He is scheduled for an additional exam next week. His injury is not, at least for now, believed to be a serious as that of Miami's Dwyane Wade, who fully separated his shoulder in February of 2007 and ultimately had to have surgery to repair the damage in May of that year.

The Wizards have been devastated by injuries in the past few seasons, with guard Gilbert Arenas just getting back on the court after missing most of the past two seasons with numerous knee injuries.
