Grizzlies, Gay fail to reach agreement on extension

Despite talking through early Monday evening, the Memphis Grizzlies and forward Rudy Gay could not come to an agreement on a contract extension before Monday's midnight deadline, meaning Gay will become a restricted free agent next summer.

"We just couldn't agree," said Gay's agent, Jeff Austin. "I think Rudy's going to have a terrific year. It's a good year to be a free agent, and hopefully the Grizzlies win a lot of games and everyone is happy."

Memphis will have the right to match any offer Gay receives next summer.

Gay, the eighth pick in the 2006 Draft, is one of many high-profile players from that class who could not make deals with their current teams on extensions. Only six players from that class have agreed to deals, including the five-year, $55 deal the Celtics reached with guard Rajon Rondo on Monday.

But players like Gay, Washington's Randy Foye and Utah's Ronnie Brewer couldn't get a deal done.
