Defensive whiz Ross signs deal with Mavs

Posted Jul 8 2009 2:43PM

DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Mavericks are bringing Quinton Ross home.

Terms of the deal with the 6-foot-6 guard were not disclosed Wednesday.

A Dallas native who played four seasons at SMU, Ross has spent the last five years with the Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies. He is known mostly for his defense, but made 37.5 percent of his 3-pointers for the Grizzlies last season. He also averaged 3.9 points and 1.9 rebounds over 17.1 minutes per game.

President of basketball operations Donnie Nelson says Ross' athleticism, defensive versatility and experience add depth to the Dallas backcourt.

The Mavs are finishing the paperwork on re-signing Jason Kidd and on extending an offer sheet to Orlando center Marcin Gortat. The club also is trying to bring back free agents Brandon Bass and James Singleton.
