|Players of the Week|
NEW YORK -- -- The Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers' Pau Gasol today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, Feb. 2, through Sunday, Feb. 8.
James led the Cavaliers to a 2-1 week, pacing the Eastern Conference in scoring with 33.7 points to go along with 9.0 assists and 8.0 rebounds. On Feb. 4 at New York, James joined Michael Jordan as the only visitors at Madison Square Garden to record multiple 50-point games when he scored 52 points and added 11 assists and nine rebounds. James became the first player to have at least those numbers in a game since Wilt Chamberlain on March 18, 1968 (53 points, 14 assists, 32 rebounds). With his 30th point on Feb. 3 against Toronto, James became the youngest player in NBA history to reach 12,000 points. This is James' fifth Player of the Week Award this season.
Gasol helped the Lakers to a 4-0 week, averaging 26.0 points on .667 shooting and ranked third in the league with 13.8 rebounds while on an East Coast road trip. On Feb. 5, Gasol posted 24 points and 14 rebounds in the Lakers' 110-109 overtime win over the Boston Celtics. Gasol recorded point-rebound double-doubles in all four games and led or tied the team in rebounds three times. Gasol tallied 18 points, 12 rebounds and six assists as the Lakers ended Cleveland's 23-game home winning streak with a 101-91 win on Feb. 8. At 41-9, the Lakers own the NBA's best record.
