Rockets' Yao leaves game with sore knee

Posted Jan 23 2009 11:16PM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Houston center Yao Ming left Friday's game against the Indiana Pacers with a sore right knee, and the team said he will not play in the second half.

The All-Star missed much of the second quarter while sitting on the bench with an ice pack on the knee. He returned later in the quarter, but did not join his team to start the second half.

Yao finished with eight points and five rebounds in 17 minutes. He had averaged 21.8 points and 9.8 rebounds the previous five games while shooting 71 percent from the field.

Houston already was short-handed because of injuries to Tracy McGrady and Ron Artest.

McGrady missed his 16th game this season with a sore left knee. Artest has missed 13 games with an ankle injury.
