Toronto's Calderon strains hamstring during Friday's game

Posted Jan 2 2009 8:31PM

TORONTO (AP) -- Toronto guard Jose Calderon left the Raptors' game Friday night against Houston in the second quarter because of a sprained right hamstring, the same injury that sidelined him for two games in November.

Calderon is averaging 13.4 points and is third in the NBA with 9.0 assists. He was injured driving to the basket against Rockets guard Aaron Brooks late in the first quarter, running out of bounds and clutching at his leg before leaving the game and heading to the locker room for treatment.

Calderon returned early in the second quarter, but lasted just a few possessions before signaling to the bench for a substitution and being replaced by Will Solomon.

It was the first time Calderon had failed to record an assist since a 102-98 win at Indiana last Feb. 25, a stretch of 57 games.

Calderon, who is in his third NBA season, has made 75 consecutive free throws dating to last season. He signed a five-year contract extension with Toronto last July after guard T.J. Ford was traded to Indiana.

Toronto already was without forward Jermaine O'Neal, who missed his second straight game because of a sore right knee.
