Dec. 1 -- Sometimes it's the little things that make the difference. Every week we take you around the Eastern Conference for a look at the day-to-day developments on real NBA teams and how they might affect your fantasy squad.
Boston Celtics: Mark Blount is out and Kendrick Perkins is in. Why? Because the coach wants his center to out rebound his point guard. Makes sense. Not that Perkins is a great rebounder but 19 rebounds against the Sixers will keep him in the starting lineup for some more time. Fantasy-wise it is better to avoid both unless you are really, really desperate. A better bet is Al Jefferson, who will eventually start getting starters minutes in the frontcourt. Not now, but eventually.
New Jersey Nets: I’m just guessing but even the Nets would like to have a center who outrebounds their point guard. For now Jason Collins holds on to his job … Nenad Krstic is becoming predictable, as in he explodes for almost 20 points whenever the Nets play teams with a weak frontcourt -- i.e. the Warriors, Kings or Lakers -- but fails to match up against teams with a strong presence in the paint. And guess what? The Nets will be playing the Eastern Conference teams in the coming weeks. (wink wink)
New York Knicks: Stephon Marbury is back. Steph is scoring in excess of 22 points per game in his last four while dishing out seven assists. That’s the Marbury I drafted. I’m not sure how long this is going to last. Coach Larry Brown surely doesn’t want to let Marbury do his own thing for long so things could get murky going forward. In any case if you can ship Marbury for someone like Chauncey Billups or Kirk Hinrich based on his name value, go for it. This could be your best window of opportunity … Eddy Curry is out injured. Bad news for those who own him. Great news for those of us who own Channing Frye. A statline of 17 points and seven rebounds in last five. I’m loving it!!
Philadelphia 76ers: Now playing, “Return of Samuel Dalembert." Sammy-D is back and 17 rebounds and five blocks in his first two games sounds great. Sammy is having trouble finding the bucket but that shouldn’t last long. Great double-double potential. Make a trade offer to his owner. Who knows you might get lucky … Dalembert’s return will mean an end to Chris Webber’s double double averages. C-Webb will score his 20 points but he won’t get to mop up all those easy rebounds anymore … By the way, if you have Steven Hunter drop him.
Toronto Raptors: Mike James is showing no signs of stopping. I was trying to shop him around but now I’m thinking its better to keep him. His 15 points, five assists and at least one three pointer every game sure has use on my team … I wonder what Chris Bosh be thinking. Dude averages 20 points, 10 rebounds and his team can’t win a game. Good player on a bad team. Is that what we’ll remember him as? Too early to tell and I don’t mind those numbers as a fantasy owner … Charlie Villanueva is struggling to find consistency but hold on to him. He is a special talent in the Donyell Marshall mode ideal for fantasy basketball.
Chicago Bulls: WOW! The Baby Bulls sure did finish their Western road trip in style. From a fantasy point of view though the Bulls are a puzzle. Seven players play more than 20 minutes a game, only two of them play more than 30 minutes. The team is loaded with fantasy talent and the minutes distribution only keeps you wanting for more … I wasn’t high on Chris Duhon at the start of the season but now I’m starting to believe in him. His 10 points, six assists, 1.6 three pointers and 1.3 steals per game so far this season and playing nearly 35 minutes per game on this team. Looking good for more.
Cleveland Cavaliers: Donyell Marshall’s fantasy returns keep getting worse every game. Keep him on your bench. That’s your best option. You won’t get enough in return if you want to trade him now … Told ya! Zydrunas Ilgauskas will start swatting two shots a game soon. Big Z is probably still available in trade. Make an offer while his owner is still willing to trade him.
Detroit Pistons: He may not be rebounding as much as you like but Rasheed Wallace with his bucketful of three pointers, steals and blocks probably is the best center eligible player in your fantasy league, and now he has started passing the ball, too. More than four assists in his last five games. What’s not to like? … If you are in a deep league keep an eye on Antonio McDyess. McDyess was one of the few fantasy worthy players playing of the bench and is starting to post good games.
Indiana Pacers: Jamaal Tinsley keeps playing well. He's posted 13 points and five assists in his last four games. I’ll still say, given his injury history, better trade him away now … Austin Croshere is making his presence felt in the Pacers frontcourt. His 10 points and 15 rebounds against the Hawks was a brilliant performance. However, the Pacers have a lot of depth in the frontcourt, most of it injured right now. But once they have a healthy roster, Croshere won’t get the 30 minutes he is getting now.
Milwaukee Bucks: Just when I was getting worried about Joe Smith replacing Andrew Bogut in the starting lineup, Joe Smith injures himself and Bogut comes up with a 19-point, 14-rebound game against the Mavericks. Bogut will most likely go back to the bench when Smith comes back but should get more playing time going forward. After all he is the first pick of this years draft … It’s good to have a scoring guard like Maurice Williams on your team to play from the bench. It’s good to own him in your fantasy league, too.
Atlanta Hawks: Something strange happened one of my leagues. Someone dropped Al Harrington. I was shocked and rushed to find out if there was something wrong. Of course nothing is wrong. I don’t know what his owner was thinking. Now I’m enjoying Harrington’s 19 points, eight rebounds, two steals (!) and four assists (!) in his last five games. Those steals and assists will come down and that free throw percentage of less than 70 percent isn’t something I like but I’ll take Harrington on my team anyday … Meet Salim Stoudamire, this year’s Ben Gordon. Now he isn’t helping his team win games like Gordon did but I like the 15 points and two three pointers he averaged over his last five games.
Charlotte Bobcats: Gerald Wallace!! Woo Hoo!! If you own him you’ll know why I’m so ecstatic. If you don’t just look at his stats in four games coming back from a wrist injury -- 19 points, 8 rebounds, 1.5 three pointers, field goal percentage above 50 percent, 2.3 steals and three blocks per game. Those three pointers will come down a notch but this looks like the year Wallace breaks out. Enjoy those steals and blocks!! … Somehow the return of a slasher like Wallace has opened up the floor for Kareem Rush, who averaged 17 points and two three pointers per game in his last five and is probably still on the waiver list in your league.
Miami Heat: Alonzo Mourning Block Count is now at 58. ‘Zo blocked nine shots against the Knicks!! Crazy!! Super Crazy!! And still no signs of Shaquille O’Neal … Jason Williams is looking great after his return from injury. Williams has scored 18 points, dished out 4.5 assists and hit more than one three pointer in his last four games … If you are looking for help with three pointers, here’s James Posey. Posey is hitting more than two three pointers every game and his minutes are on the rise. If he starts contributing in other categories, he won’t last long on the waiver wire.
Orlando Magic: The Magic have finally wised up to playing Jameer Nelson more, and have started winning. It looked like a no brainer towards the end of last season, wonder what took them so long? Nelson averaged more than 14 points, four assists, one three pointer and one steal in his last five games. He’s probably off the waiver wire by now but if he is still there pick him up immediately even if you don’t need a point guard. His fantasy value is on the way up making him extremely tradable … Hedo Turkoglu is scoring more -- nearly 17 points -- with Nelson playing.
Washington Wizards: At what point do you say, "Gilbert Arenas I like your stats but I have to trade you now, your field goal percentage is just too low." Nearly 25 points per game, great, a field goal percentage of less than 35 percent, ugh!!! One more week of this and I’m trading him out … A line of 27 points against the Pistons was good to see, but we want more of it, Caron Butler! Put your back into it!!
